Dead turbo 400?
Well I think the turbo 400(behind a 350) in the 45 wagon bit the dust
![]() Tell me what ya think..... doesn't go forward......doesn't go reverse, in park it still rolls. Fluid doesn't look or smell burnt. Linkage works, when running and I put it into park(from drive) it makes a grinding whirling noise(doesn't sound very good ![]() Don't know if it's related or not but today it started having a bit of a hicup and would die. So I changed the burnt points......then took it for a spin.....and it died again, got it started then it had no trany. In the last 2 weeks its worked like a charm, no slipage or any signs it's was on it's way out. oh and I might have killed it myself, when it died once I rolled down a hill backward......me kinda thinks it was still in gear(or maybe not) so as I know jack shit(but I'm gonna be learing I think) about auto tranies.....what ya all think? John H(fixed 2 today.....lost one)

based on the descriptions, it almost sounds like the tranny is fine, but the adapter or the t-case is bad.
have you pulled the cover off the side of the t-case? Something about the tranny making the whirling/grinding noises when you try tp put it in park makes me think the t-case is turning when it should be stopped(cause the truck is not moving...) not sure, of course, but something is not adding up here. -Brett

SAME on what brett said,
try puttin transfercase in another mode, could have just came out or bent a fork. if still no go then open t case side, if spin input gear in t case then somthing there is wrong, if no spin in t case then broke something on the output side of the tranny, as with the noise from going from drive to park sounds like the tranny is working. Please use two people and be careful or jackstands, yuck, but be carelful

Brett.....DUDE!
so I went out and put it in low range.....and it moved.....then put it back in high......and it still moved I got no freakin clue what happend or what I did but it "seems" all is well the lever hadn't been touched sense the day I got it.....kinda wierd? oh and i feel like an idiot for not trying the t-case no I got to figure out why its dying all of a sudden, started out of the blue! I took the old points off and they were welded together, replaced them(and cap/rotor) and it still died? maybe the fuel pump....or carb I suppose. oh well.......she freakin moves so that make me damn happy ![]() thanks BTW I'm working on a pair of 45 wagons, the one you know about and one other.....I'll let ya know more offline when I do......no promises but.... John

Glad it works!
Been there done that before, although not with an auto. If it keeps burning the points, or they look shitty even thought they are new, check the condensor. I have installed new points left the old condensor in and had bad points again. what are the symptoms of it crapping out on you?

Well, given the list of sypmtoms, I would check the following:
Ignition: -check the points again, and there should be a condensor (under the dist cap?) or it will toast points and have a mysteriously erratic and weak spark, which in cases I have seen is almost transparent under no load(not driving), but more apparent while driving... as for the explanation to the dies later, not sure. -When you put the points in, you have to set the dwell first and timing second on the older style GM distributors, but with the window in the cap, it is easy with an 1/8"?? allen wrench. You can do it with a feeler gauge, but an dwell meter is much better. -Here is a decent description of doing it on older GM's distributors... -Is the sprak strong? as in bluish, and not orange? Fuel: -Fuel delivery, not just the filter, but make sure there is good fuel flow from the tank...this is easy to tell by starting a siphon, be careful and do it outside...it will flow easily if nothing is block the pickup in hte tank. Typically the fuel pumps will leak out of the telltale hole(mechanical) if they fail internally, but you can check for a noticalbe gas smell in the engine oil too... -could be vapor lock, but I really doubt it. Those would be my first things to look at. -Brett

You realy need to get rid of that points dist. and get a nice G.M. HEI that will drop rite in, and never give you trouble.
