Hey, cool board!
Here's my problem: 78 FJ40 starts and runs great first thing in the AM. Recently though, after running for 1/2 hour i get backfires and hesitation followed by a stall. I'm then unable to restart. Engine cranks but won't catch. My cruiser has California emission stuff, could that be the issue? any help greatly appreciated!! Charlie |

mine did this a while back and the culprit was a bad coil that would die out when it got really hot. It would sputter, than die. When it cooled down it did the same thing.
Start, run, sputter, die. You can get them through Napa for about $30. I would use a friends first to see if maybe that is it.

Second the coil as a potential culprit, also possibly the ignitor. You may want to consider upgrading to electronic ignition. There are some aftermarket ones, but what I chose (and really like) is the 83-84 Ignition from an FJ60. You need to replace the distributor, coil, and ignitor as well as the engine side cover (83 and up has a dent in it to clear the distributor) from the same model year.
Total cost for used was about $150 from Warden's. I chose to have the distributor re-weighted/sprung for centrifugal advance and performance. Works great, no more damn points to adjust, and ITS WATERPROOF! <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> |
