Decisions, decisions.....
My goal is to stretch my wheelbase within reason (no frame cuts yet) during my axle install/spring over. For the rear, I am installing 55 springs. Thought #1: Leave the shackle hanger in its stock location and use one of these God-aweful 3" shackles that I am using for my SUA at present. I am thinking that this will give me a 45 degree angle on the shackle for a nice smooth ride, plus the droop should be wicked! The long shackle should not give me much additional lift since it will be at an angle. Though #2: Front FJ-40 springs reversed with the military wrap on the shackle reversed end (front) stretching my wheel base another 3 inches to the front. I am thinking about picking up some "new" Cool Cruisers stock springs for $80 each to do this. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Nolan,
It is Matt, before you buy the springs from Cool Cruisers check out my stock springs. I will trade you my springs and some $ for your alcans. Just a thought. Let me know if you are interested.

I have a stack of pancake FJ-40 springs that I can get for free. I was just tossing around getting new springs instead.
Just a thought....maybe they would last longer/flex better/give more lift??? I don't know

Nolen -
If you flip the front springs and keep the wraps where they belong, then you have to do some redrilling. Heres an idea: Get Alcan to make you the single leafs that you would neeed to redrill, custom to your spec. That way it can be any increase in base that you want.

The wraps belong on the fixed end of the spring right? If that is the case, they will be in the right place when i do the shackle reversal, right?

Oooooo hydro assist huh. Cool, that the tie rod is behind the axle. When you do a spring swap and do the shackle reversal it can get a bit tight as a result of the short distance between the axle and the spring mounting point. Compound that with the angle that the spring has to be to get it to the frame... Sounds like a really neat set up though!!!!
Now lets see I need some dana 60's, that extra saginaw box so I can do hydraulic assist steering (You out there clay??? ) And a crawler box for my truck... Moab will be fun next year.... I was thinking of hitting the hammers over Thanksgiving. anyone up for fried turkey ala sledgehammer??????

Sounds like that will work out very well, Nolen... Are you going full width??
I would think about pulling the overload leaves out of the rear 55 series springs, and adding them to the front packs in whatever layer, to stiffen the front and soften the rear. You are gonna have a traction arm in the rear right?? This will even up the flex front-to-rear, so the front doesn't do all the work. If you wanna get really custom, inboard the rear springs to make them the same distance apart as the fronts, that would be killer, but stock LC springs are probably too soft to have that setup be safe. I think you're gonna be happier spring over Good Luck!!

The axles are going to be 62" WTW.
I am going to try the reverse steering, if not, I will go with the standard setup. Nolen

I also reversed the front and had the military wrap leaf redrilled so I could spin it. |

69 it looks like you have the pig springs in the back of your cruiser. Is that true? Or did you move the rear shackle hanger forward?

69...do you ever have problems with the shackle geting suck after to compress it? I was thinking that may be a problem.
As for the front, is the military wrap on the fixed end or the shackle end?

In the front I flipped the 2nd spring with the wrap around so that it would be at the fixed end. I took it to a spring shop to drill it for me, cost me 10 bucks. |

Are they close enough to the fj55 springs that the longer shackle would still work? I think it'd be great if I didn't have to move the rear hanger. Thanks!

another dif between the 55's and the waggy's is that the waggy's dont have a mil wrap, they are a little softer, they have larger bushings (good thing) and the center pin is off center about an inch.
oh, and the waggys are a dime a dozen at pnp when we did 69cruiser's conv. he already had a spring rev. and the waggys didnt move his axle from that position. Im tellin ya, those thangs is ssssssssoft

I decided on stock springs reversed with a SR in the front and Pig springs in the rear. Should stretch me out to 96-97 inches.
I'll try it this way before I chop it in 1/2.
