trunion bearings

Okay, How often have you guys replaced your trunion bearings? (they are the knuckle bearings) I am waiting for a set of them and cannot decide if I want to replace them or not.....
If I do I will have to wait to try the new 38.5's out if I don't I can get the beast running this weekend!!!!

I only replace them if they feel sloppy or rough. Not on a regular replacement cycle. They should last for many years.

I would agree with KrustyCruiser. Don't replace unless you have slop.

I know I shouldn't assume but I think the pickup axles are the same. On mine the races were bad not the bearings. They were notchy any where other than straight ahead. New bearings wouldn't of done me anygood with out new races.

dog walker: So mine that have play should hold together when I get my 35s on? or should I start tearing the knuckles apart? Any idea where a re-build kit is available for the knuckles, mine leak too, so I may as well do it all at once. thanks in advance.

Here is my experience. By the time your knuckles are dripping grease and gunk it is time to replace those bearings!!! Mine had wierd wear spots when the tire was pointed straight ahead. Pull the knuckles apart and rebuild them. Most of the LC parts houses sell a kit. And it generally costs around $100. Personally I would prefer not to have to rebuild a set of knuckles out on the trail. Think of it as general upkeep....

Mine needed to be replaced. The probably would have broken with the 38.5's.....

By all means, don't do what I'd do!!!

Replace them now if they have slop in them, you can get them from your local dealer as well, in your case, you can order them for your cruiser up til 90 (fj40/55/60/62), or for a mini truck from 79-85. Keep in mind that sometimes they will say for instance "we don't carry those for a 71 FJ40" but like I said, the above years and models will work.

No offense intended! It is just that I have never seen anyone bring extra trunion bearings with them on a trail ride :-)
I already have mine on order. The whole kit retails for around $99 and that included all of the seals and adjustment shims.

Hehe, no offense taken, but rest assure, I've always carried spares with me! Needed them a couple of times to, not to mention all the times I've had to hand them out out on the trail.
