Newbie Fawker Needs Help again!!!

Found a '67 FJ40 today and was checking it out. Couple of things that I noticed that I need some help with.

1) It was more than likely an original soft top as the it has a drop tail gate, but now it has a hard top. Or at least it looked like a hard top but the roof on this one was fiberglass and sagging badly. The sides of the top were steel but not the top. Any ideas?

2) The other is a price guestimate. It has been treated fairly well. But has sat for a couple of years and really hasnt been anyones DD for more than 5 years. It started on the second try after sitting for 16 mos. Had to borrow the battery out of my truck. Sounded really good. Original F motor with 74k It has a new AISAIN carb from SOR. I couldn't take it for a drive as we got blocked in, long story and it was my own damn fault. No obvious or hidden cancer. Just a couple of spots where the paint has chipped and rusted and little bit of rust at the bottom edge of the door.

He still has the original 67 era parts and service manual with it. Obviously used with numerous grease stains notes and dog eared pages.

The guy is asking $5k but I know he is thinking $4k. Does anyone think this thing is worth $3k.

I have some pictures but no star so if someone would want to post I can send them.

If it runs well and the body is clean (no rust), then I think it is worth 3K. You'll probably want to swap out the front axle and get disk brakes. IMHO, nothing wrong with old Cruisers. They had better sheet metal which was thicker and less prone to rust. I'm partial to old Cruisers since mine was manufactured in Nov. 1968.

That and a cop who noticed we had a beer in our hand while swapping out the battery and decided to take his dinner break across the street.

to answer the question about the top. All fj40s hard tops have fiberglass tops, with metal sides.

Any ideas how the ended up with a fiberglass top?
Anyone else think this is worth $3k- $4K?

If I don't decide to get it, I will post up the contact info for folk in SO Cal.

$5K seems awful steep to me. I bought my 77 for 4K and it was in really good shape. I guess it depends on the market your in.

Is 67 the year you want? You might figure out what features you want then scour the rea (Several states) for that year. That is why I got a late 70's. Wanted the 2F, 4 Speed and brakes that came with it.

Good luck!

Re: Re: Newbie Fawker Needs Help again!!!

YES, all 40's have fiberglass tops with metal sides

67 has no brake booster, a single line brake master, drum front end(and can not be easily converted to disc) 3 speed trany on colume, vaccume t-case. Steering colume is also one piece harpoon style......means if you get in a accident the colume will harpoon you thru the chest

IMOP early 40's need a swap to a dual master, booster, disc front end and a 4 speed.

Me I would only pay 3-4k if it was in VERY good shape. Best parts about a 67 is the sheet metal is better than some of the latter 40's, so less prone to rust. ALso the drop gate is worth worth something.

Also FWIW a 67 should still have a 1 barrel carb stock. as well as I think a non US dizzy with the little dial to adjust timing on the side.

I guess it depends on what your planing on doing with the 67? driver or wheeler or ? Depending on this you might be better off finding a 76+ 40......

Thanks I appreciate the info.

Did not know about the fiberglass top. My newbie is showing.

I have been scouring the area pretty thorough for a few months now and it is hard to find any that have not had their prices over inflated.

Welcome to SO Cal. where everything is inflated.

I think I will continue my search unless this guy will take $3K.

Thanks again.
