chevy 283 question
OK, I'm totally ignorant in the ways fo the v8, as all my cruisers are straight 6 powered...Time for me to learn something new, as the fj45lv I just bought has a chevy 283 v8...what's that? When were they made? Good or bad? Pooch or rocker? Educate me
Thanks!

All sm b chev are basically th same engine, it is a decent motor, although unless I had one that needed nothing I would build a 350.

283 Motor
283 motors are o.k. They are a mid-range motor. Very zippy. Not as much torque as a 350. If I was going to build a V8 engine it would be a 350 or maybe a 383 stroker if I had the money.
If the 283 engine is good, use it until it dies. Otherwise, spend your money on a different motor. Just my .02 pesos. CrznDawg |

OK:
283 = 3.875" x 3.00" 350 = 4.000" x 3.48" If my 283 is "tired" maybe I can bore for 350 slugs, and get a nice revvving bigger bore shorter stroke motor? I dunno how or if it runs, the truck is still a log way from home...

While they were great motors in their day, ditch it and go for a good running late model injected V8. You will be MUCH happier in the end.

That's basically what Chevy did for the '67-69 Z-28 302 motors. With some roller valve train work, I've seen this motor turn 8000 rpm with no ill effects. They sound increadilble but I doubt it's really the engine you want in a cruiser. Kent |

Yea, along with the carb, etc. My only point being that that was the way Chevy built the 302 for Trans Am racing with less than 5 litres displacement. They are naturally a revin' mofo, not that they couldn't be built to grunt.
