I am now sure that the new type slave cylinder will not work with the old type master cylinder, on my rig at least.
A friend of mine borrowed my rig for a week to tansport his new 350 sbc to his Range Rover. In return he replaced the slave cylinder, which was buggered. Problem is he used the post 75 slave. He told me that it has a bigger bore than the original and that set of the alarm bells straight away. A bigger bore SLAVE will give less throw than a smaller bore slave when using the same master - yes? Originally I could engage first gear with a little difficulty. I found that if I extended the pushrod, the friction point would be somewhere off the floor but it would slowly return to its old ways. Classic buggered slave symptoms. Now the friction point of the clutch pedal is somewhere below the floor! Am I right here with the bigger bore thing?

In the US, Toyota went to the 2F/4spd combo in '75. If your Cruiser is a '74, it could very well have the 3spd style clutch components, even though it probably had a 4spd tranny. '74 was a big transition year, so the '75 slave may not be working correctly as you suspect. If it worked before, but not now, that's probably it.
