I saw this windshield in the May 2001 issue of petersons 4wheel & offroad (page 61) and was wondering what you guys think of a poly carbonate window. The material is ultra tough and very resistant to scratching. I guess the only drawback is that it is not DOT approved. just looking for some feedback.

Ater a roll over a few years ago my windshield frame was screwed beyond repair. I fabed up a steel frame and screwd lexan to it to use as a wind shield. It worked cool but it scratched very easily. kiss your windshield wipers goodbye, they will scratch the shit out of it. I used rain x instead of wipers to shed the water. and once they scatch up, the glare is a mother. Thats just my exp. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I know about that windshield you want to use, my buddy is using one. They do not scratch with just whipers, but watch out on using rainX. You have to find out if it is ok to use it because that shield has a chemical coating to keep it from scratching, the rainX might mess it up. As for dot approved, unless you piss off the officer or just volenteer the information they are not going to know. A dot approved windshield has #'s etched into it, this poly one does not; that is the only way to tell. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

We sell DOT approved acrylic for side windows and supply polycarbonate to some racecar windshield manufacturers. FJ40 windshield is a no brainer, if you are interested let me know, I can cut one for you to try out. Actually, my windshield broke when we took the tub off so I need a new one. I might just knock one or two out to try it. NOS from the dealer with TLCA discount is around $75.00. Polycarb would be cheaper, but not DOT approved.

If the replacement side and corner windows are cost prohibitive, I could form them as well. Let me know! <IMG SRC="smilies/idea.gif" border="0">
