I need a sm465/203 combo bad
Hey guys, I've been watching the for sale section and have posted in wanted but haven't had any luck. I'm a High School teacher and my students and I are building my FJ as auto tech project. We were gonna run a NV4500/203/Atlas but its just too long even with the axle pushed back 10 inches. We want to switch to a sm465/203 combo but can't find one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are in Atlanta but will pay to ship.
TIA, Chris

Give me a call. I dont have any but Bailey Q. at the GA Cruisers had one he just sold and I think he can get more. Patrick out in Doraville bought Baileys SM465 so it might be FS.
BTW: I need help at my shop. Might as well get a few HS kds involved. PM me if you dont have my contact info.

This is not a very common combo. People have wanted this set up for years, and there are not that many who acctually have been lucky enough to find it. Make sure it is a 203 and not a 205 t case...
Good luck! -Steve

OK , maybe I'm lost, but I think maybe you are, the 465/203 combo is only desirable for using the front section in a doubler, if this is not your intention, why are yu wanting to use a t case that is at best a large boat anchor........it is also a long mofo since the reduction box is outside the normal gearbox section, and it uses a 6-8" adapter. Are you using a centered rear axle?

The 465/203 is probably going to be used infront of the atlas somehow. Good luck finding it, tough for sure.
Why the need for the silly-low reduction of the 4:1 atlas and the 2:1 np203 with the 6.54 1st of the sm465? even with only 4.11 that is 215:1

I doubt that, the only thing that makes sense is to use it like Jack did in truggy, in front af a 205....I have one, but it ain't going anywhere

See Jack Rice's site darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jrice it lists what years had the 465/203 combo and what years are desiriable. Then search @ car-part.com and you can probably find it pretty cheap. Car-part.com rules!

I agree but just did a nationwide search for 4 speed full time case 1974 and it spit out at least a dozen, one for $175
It is the 203 that is rare, I think any 10 spline 465 will work?On another note just scored my e-locker diff for $300 + $20 in shipping. Can't beat the price on that for a selectable locker! The rarest is the 465/203 which you must have to do the 465/203/205 the adapter between the 465 and 203 and the 203/465 input gear are the rare items. T350 203's are a dime a dozen, literally.

Thanks guys. Let me explain,
I know the reduction is super sick low and totally unnecessary- wait til I tell you about the motor-(Propane powered 500inch Caddy Torque Monster). I wanted something a bit different. As you all know, here in the southeast there is a lot of mud- even on the rocks. For this reason, I like 2:1 reduction for the wheelspeed, with the granny low in the tranny it should be plenty to get by with but I think I'd still wind up wanting sometimes. Also, I plan to eventually travel out west (summers off) to hit all the fun spots I see posted here. This is why I want 4:1 too. I considered the 203/205 option but figured if I was making room for a doubler why not throw an Atlas back there. I have the shorter no speedo version of the 3.8 Atlas with front output upgrade arriving next week. You have to admit it will be cool to have 4 shift levers and 1;1, 2:1, 3.8:1, & 7.6:1 to choose from. AA offers a kit to mate the 203 an Atlas very similar to the one that is used to mate to the Toy, I may try to make my own first, but we'll see. CaverInaCruiser- got any contact info on that Wasatch guy. Chef- I contacted Morgan a while back when his stuff was at the top in for sale. Understandably, he wanted to sell his whole setup. I'm sure he'l see this here and if he has changed his mind, maybe he'll post. DD113- Do you mean Patrick from 4x4customs, green7yellow fj40, got that 465/203? or someone else? Got contact info? As far as the kids in autotech, they pretty much require constant supervision so you would wind up paying them to slow you down. They can do brakes and oil changes but even then you have to follow up behind them and check their work. Worse still they have short attention spans and don't stay on task and don't clean up after themselves. Many think they ore above getting dirty or pushing a broom. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good ones and with guidance they are great but I wouldn't wish them on anyone that wasn't getting paid to deal with them.

Mine's still for sale. Last I heard Greg Dyche wants the whole thing, lock stock and barrel.
My setup is perfect for an FJ55, and I'd prefer to sell it to someone who's gonna put it in one, but it would be suitable for any 1960s or 1970s cruiser, really. Stuff like the skid plate and driveshafts might not be appropriate but could be modified to fit. I'm selling: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showp...9&postcount=21 Would like to sell it! Morgan

I understand why you would want/need the combo. Its a great set up. I have this same set up only different. MY set up consists of a 3.9 cummins/465/203/AtlasII 5.0
Yes it was not cheap and no it wasnt the easiest combo to install but I feel it was well worth the effort. Think of the gearing option you have? Most people dont see the whole picture they only see the double low combo which in most cases is unneccesary. I did it to get a unlimited supply of gearing for my turbo diesel which doesnt see a lot of high RPMs and it gives me a great front drive shaft as well. I have to admit the cool factor is there but it is very functional. My final crawl ratio is 300+.1 Makes for some nice control in the big boulder fields. If anyone would like to know more on this set up feel free to PM me. -josh |
