Booty fab snorkels

I'm debating on whether I should try to make a snorkel myself for my 62, or if I should wait until I've done my other financially demanding projects and then get a Safari later on down the road. Any thoughts from those of you who've built your own?

Around here, as dusty as it gets, it certainly wouldn't hurt. Plus I've been told that having a snorkel with a forward facing inlet helps a great deal at highway speeds, which is where I spend most of my time driving home to Seattle and back.

Yeah I figured that'd be a good way to go. I just need to figure out how to properly seal the whole thing and make it good and water tight. I'm thinking of just pulling the little snout off the airbox and securing the larger diameter PVC pipe to that with an epoxy of some sort, but I would think epoxy wouldn't las as long as I'd like it to. Then there's the whole issue of getting it through the fender without geting it all f*ckered up. The fender is the main reason why I haven't decided to just go for it instead of getting a Safari when my money's not so tight.

A few of the Alaska Cruiser Crew are running homeade 2" PVC snorkels. Mark Whatley has them on his mini trucks and have proven them selves time and again in DEEEEEP water crossings. You can us a dryer vent for the intake and it works good. 2.5" hole saw and the fender is no problem. Connect to air cleaner with plastic dredge hose and your good to go.

In reallity buy the time the air fom a snorkel goes through the filter your really not going to get much of a "forced induction" type of effect and stock Land Cruiser airfilters are outstanding for filtration, soooooo I guess you need to decied if you really need it. Can buy a lot of filters for what you would pay for a Safari Snorkel. But that does not factor in the COOL factor of a snorkel! They are very cool, especialy when they work. You can look on my web site and see pictures of PVC snorkels on a Blue Mini and white Mini.

Later,
Greg

Anybody who says a snorkle made their truck go faster is smoking crack. It's all about the looks. If I were you, I'd spend the money on a decent lift and lockers.

If you epoxy/glue some bastardized conglomeration of PVC pipe in your fender, how are you ever gonna get it back out?

If you would like to make your own snorkel, look here for parts -airflowonline

They sell much of the Donaldson line. Safari uses the Donaldson air ram hood, which is difficult to come by on-line, and the bowl precleaner as an option.

snork snork...think "depotfab"

Personally, if you were going to "ram air" the 60, I would go with a snorkel that was made for it rather than the home depot approach.

This way I have spare dryer vent hose in case a freak storm takes it out and I really need to wash clothes...or offroading a tree takes it out! thats having a backup!

On a 55 they would be easier to bootyfab....

Here is mine... btw, having replaced a motor another 4x4 I have owned (because I hydrolocked it with water) ... Snorkels are NOT just for looks!
The other benefit that you get is when your motor gets dirty -- just put baggie over the end of the snorkel, lift the hood & power wash the engine & rest of the truck with no worries...

I got a deal on a safari for my 62 or I would have made one out of exhaust pipe. PVC would be OK but metal pipe is better. I would use somthing stronger than dryer vent to run it through the fender. Big truck fuel line comes to mind. I have the donaldson pre cleaner and it works! I can clean out as much as a 1/4" of dust out of it after a full day on dirt roads. The "ram" seems sorta useless. I will sell you one cheap if you need it. I do get slightly better milage with the snork which I blame on the colder air higher up. I do not think there is much difference in the velocity of the air after all the twists and turns it takes. Cleaner colder air is up high on the road so it can only help.

Most of the dust around here comes from being stirred up from the road by vehicles, so it doesn't get very high, but many times it gets THICK and cleaning my air filter on a monthly basis is something I could do without. As far as ram air, I ain't trying to make a tractor motor into a racer, but anything that'll help me hold a hill at 70 MPH is a benefit. I know it ain't gonna give a ram air effect, but as long as it'll put more air to the filter at speed, I'll be happy.

...and yes looks are a small part

BTW, FJ62 = 3FE
