Adding oil to A/C

Fairly soon I'm going to get the stuff I need to service my A/C, and replace the receiver/drier in the process. The manual says to add a small amount of oil when replacing it, but how exactly do I add the oil? Do I just pour it in to the high (or low) pressure line while the system is open, or what?

I have always poured ester oil into the compressor with the compressor out of the vehicle and let it sit for a few hours to work its way in. This could be completely wrong so you might want to get more info, but it has worked in the past.

If the system is open you can pour oil directly into the compressor, if it's closed you can get pressurized oil charges that work very well.

You can normally just pour it in if the system is open, but make sure you use the right type of oil. Ester oil is for r134a IIRC, mineral oil for r12.

You would normally add 2-3 ounces of oil to the drier. If other pieces of the system have been drained of oil, add that amount also.

I am assuming this is normal maint and not a repair?

What type of compressor does it have?

under vaccum is the easiest way to do it. vacuum the system down, and let the machine suck it in...lol or if your cheap, and your using manifold guages, just take the yellow suction line you would hook up the can of refridgerant, and dip it in yer oil, open up the low side, and viola, its sucked into the system WITH A VACUUM STILL THERE....if not, when you vaccum it down, some of the oil comes out again
