Dumb brake question
FINALLY got the parts I needed for the power disk swap into my 67.
Here are the parts I have accrued: Wardens Booster Adapter FJ55 master/booster 1986 Minitruck booster/master IFS Hubs, Disks, calipers Complete toyota solid axle but here is the kicker- today I bought a 78 FJ55 complete for $250. Splitting that with a friend with a 55, so I am into a factory cruiser disc setup for short money. Holding fluid, too. Truck has 86K on it. SO, I am thinking of just tossing in some longs, rebuilding, and chucking that axle in. Seems the least amount of money. Are there any options to the $150 per caliper plus 80 core? By the way, calipers at my toyota dealer were $536.12 ea!!!! thoughts?

Seems like there is an ad for "Monster Calipers" in the TT, i bet they are much cheaper. I think some 4Runner calipers are a direct swap as well - I sure wouldn't want to pay that dealer price - good luck.

I'd use the mini truck parts from the solid front end, and sell the 78 axle for twice what you paid for the 55 to buy the new inners and birfields.

Wow.. Um. Ok.. If it were my truck, and I were to want to wheel it hard, here is how I would approach your situation and conversion..
a 1967.. Lemme make this easy on you.. You have (I'm pretty sure) a ball and claw front axle, no oil seal but a brass bushing, to use your front axle to convert to disk you'd need to pull out the brass bushing and get a seal that'd fit. Not easy, But the easy thing to do in the meantime is use the 1978 FJ55 front axle. All bolts directly in! One tip, Grab the junction block for the brakes that's located below the curlyQ's on the frame. The 1978 and 1967 have different brake lines and you'll need to convert to newer lines. Use the drop hoses, etc from the 1978.. Course I'd buy new but you get the idea. If you wanna use the Booster off the FJ 55 make sure it'll clear your carb first.. They're pretty big if your using the 1976-1978? Booster.

Sorry, should have clarified.
The front axle is a 72 with an auburn currently, sua. Thanks for the tips. What runner calipers work? Anyone have a website for the Monster Calipers? Think I will end up using the mini booster, especially if I run the 4 runner calipers. The main reasons I was thinking of not using the mini stuff is that the tie rod/arms issue is a PITA, especially if you break on the trail. Same thing with the hybrid mini/cruier axles. I would think just chucking in a spare cruiser pair would make more sense.

TLC4x4.com for the monster calipers and monster price.
Use t100 or 94 4runner for donor calipers. Loaded rebuilt raybestos are not even $100/side and just turn in the crusty of mini/ifs or FJ55 calipers later for core return... I would use the smallest booster you have for the disc conversion. Its going to be close with the spacer.

Now THAT is what I'm talking about!!!
thanks for the info. Might be posting up extra 55 bits, but it is shot, no body panels, inverted rear springs...we'll see.

but heck last calipers I picked up for my 82 fj40 were $30ish each loaded with pads......these were from the local brake supply shop. Quote:

Dan last I remember Bond by far had the cheapest brake parts of anything I could find up there. The IFS stuff is mostly worthless with the exception of the calipers unless you go out and buy some Sky Manufacturing spacers for additional width, you can't use the rotors at all or hubs on a SFA without the spacer ($200). I would run the FJ55 axles with longs or whatever, you will have to grind your housing with whatever axle you use to get the bigger birfs in anyway...
Post pictures of your junk! Wally's too! |

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I will just run 78 cruiser remans and rotors, with a mini master to help with clearance issues. Seems the most direct and easiest route.
Here is a pic from 2 years ago (I have no others at work). This is pre- rear SOA, PTO winch, and much body carnage. Sporting the poor wallys thick-ass steel tub.

wally's 40 is running dual arb's, soa rear w/55/OME springs, 38" Boggers, blah blah blah
The 45 is running a custom flatbed, spring lift with 34x9.5" swampers, PTO winch, OD paint job, custom cage, and we cut the top off after a few beers one afternoon. I will try to get pics.
