76 vs 78 FJ40

What are the differences in the drivetrain between these two years? I'm looking at a 76 FJ40 to buy.

Thanks

only thing that comes to mind is the 78 has fine spline 4.10's, vrs corse spline 4:10's on the 76. some of the emmision stuff and carb might be different on the 2F, but that about it I think.

both are 4 speeds, both 2F's, both disc brake

The 78 might have fine spline. Really early '78s didnot.

Anyway, 76 has a shit load of small changes so it depends on when in 76?

but if its early 76 then the following might have changed:

cowl vent
hard top side vent windows
rollbar rear supports CL radius
warning light location
wiper motor(same location, bigger motor for 78)
windshield washer squirter
sideview mirrors/doors
fanclutch
oil cooler option

for the most part they are the same, just some small changes...

78 has the fully electronic and water tight distributor. And didn't they move the gas tank and parking brake in 78?

The spare tire carrier is different. '76 had the flat square style on the left side, 78 has the tube style on the left.

Someone please address any knuckle size differences. Does one or the other have my '77's small, oddball knuckles?

I think 40 knuckles "went big" to match fj60 and minitruck in 1981?
