Harp VintageOffroad
Hi, just joined today. I'm looking for a rust free 60 to do a diesel swap on, very hard to find here in B.C. Jon Harp of Walsenburg Colorado has had quite a few over the last year or so on the Landcruiser Trader. I know this is owned by Vintage offroad and I'm worried already. Harp says he has no connection to Mushro but did buy one vehicle off him and had to wait 6 months for the title. I didn't ask but am assuming it's a blue and white 79 55 that he had for sale last year which was on the VOR website earlier in the year. I believe he had a shop in Walsenburg called Harp Motor Company from about 98 which he sold last year.
I noticed VOR has a tan 60 with Colorado plates on it so maybe he has someone buying vehicles there for him. Maybe there is a connection, maybe not.I'm just trying to dig up as much info as I can before I deal with someone so far away. If anyone has any info on Jon Harp or could point me to a cruiser club in southern Colorado that might be able to help me I would appreciate it. Thanks, pete |

I don't know about Jon Harp but Greg Mushro is a crafty SOB and even has the deep pockets. Generally if there are cruisers he will find them and if the guy is lucky he has read about Greg Mushro so he has fair warning but only so many people are online with cruisers. Greg seems to find the cruisers out of the woodwork, he has bought from Colorado and Utah before many times right under the noses of people who have friends who would have warned them or he is able to manipulate them into "being his friend" for example a local guy who sold the orange FJ40 with airbags that Mushro sold to someone for $10G and the thing leaked like a siv. That guy sold two or three more cruisers to Mushro out of Utah...
Anyway, good idea to be careful. I may have a lead on a couple semi-clean 60s for a diesel swap, PM me your email and I'll send you the links.... |

I don't have the money together to buy right away but if there is a fair supply of rustfree 60s out there then I'd rather buy through word of mouth.I'm a long way from the dry belt and everything around here is a rustbucket. I'm still going to try to find out more about Jon Harp just because I like to solve a mystery. I've been told that John Napier of Brighton Cruisers had a connection to Walsenburg Colorado also. I'm sure that name will fire a few people up too. Too bad there are so many sleazebags out there.
I see in Toyota Trails that Colorado Landcruisers is a club in Colorado Springs and they may know something since that's fairly close to Walsenburg. Anyone on here in the club or know a member I could ask a few questions to? thanks, pete |

Find out if Napier is connected to Harp. All I know is Napier said he did business, or had a shop, in Walsenberg. There may be a connection or maybe not.
http://risingsun4x4club.org/ is in Colorado as well.

If it walks like a duck and squawks like a duck... The description by Harp of the blue/white FJ55 he has on cruizers.com is total BS in the best GM style. "Interior is very clean and body was painted to factory colors by a professional paint shop with quality paint" - when I was looking at this truck the paint was marginal at best and even GM stated that it was a father/son restoration project. There are other specifics if anyone is interested
My point is just be careful and know what you're going to buy. GM tried to sell me the FJ55 w/o a title - I waited about a month then walked away. Two days later I landed a Kalif 78FJ55, no A/C but rust free w/ a clean title. FWIW GM did refund my deposit - took a while but I did get it back. |

I have a lot of history on this pig posted at ih8mud.com - but here's the long and short... May of 2003 I found the 79 pig at VOR (didn't know GM's reputation at that time). Flew to DTW to check out the truck and was told at the time that the pig was on consignment from a women in Oklahoma. Test drove the beast during which the master brake cylinder crapped out, it needed an exhaust system and the brake sensors replaced, the A/C was "complete" but not working, additionally there was a lot of "aftermarket" wiring for intermittant wipers and other "stuff". I have a few picts of the pig in VOR's building if you're interested. Additionally, Greg offers that the "restorations" to date consist of a father and son project so some of the "restoration" will require restoring; basically I had planned to completely repaint based upon what I saw. Greg and I agree on $7,600 contingent on the brakes being fixed (I agreed to the cost of the exhast system) and a valid title. Greg states that he doesn't have the title but will contact Janice (the owner) and have it forwarded to him (and by the way Janice is going through a divorce and could really use the money from the sale of the cruiser so could I please wire the money and he will express the title to me as soon as it arrives).
About 3 weeks go by and still not title - e-mails back and forth and Greg offers up that Janice has misplaced the title but he can produce a Georgia "bill of sale" and other docs that he claimes can be presented for an Illinois title and registration. I take the docs he's forwarded and head to the Illinois DMV and have an auditor review what I have - I'm told I need a valid title to register in IL. More e-mails fly then another 2 week laps w/ no word from GM. I finally send an e-mail cancelling the deal and request that my deposit be returned. About 4 weeks later a check arrives from Ms. M. The Cruiser gods were smiling though - two days after I told Greg he could keep the pig I found a jewel of a 78 in Des Moines of all places. Green on white w/ 80k miles and zero rust. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if Harp is claiming that the paint was done by a "professional" he full of crap - these are the same claims that GM is famous for. And he wants almost $10K (American) for a truck that probably hasn't been touched since 2003 and that "Sold" for a hell of a lot less a year and a half ago. Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware. Just know what your buying and make sure that the title is valid. Imagine just for a minute Mr. Janice knocking on your door to reclaim "his" pig with his original Oklahoma title. Harry |
