How Far Can You Extend an FJ40 Rear Axle?
Knowing that you would be cutting your wheelwells, moving your springs' rear attachment points, moving shock mounts, and lengthening your rear driveshaft, how far can you extend the rear axle in an FJ40? Would there be any drawbacks to moving it 10", assuming you have room to move the rear shackle back? This would be using longer springs with a centered pin hole. What springs would fit?

i'm running chevy axles and chevy springs but figure if your soa its all the same. the reason i went chevy springs is cause if you move the front spring perch back you run into the frame being higher at that point. i used the factory front locations and just put the rear perches under my new bumper
![]() i believe my springs pushed me back near 7" i dont have a measurement for them but there rear springs out of a early 80's half ton. Last edited by ironpig70; 05-02-2005 at 10:02 AM. |

With my axle in the center spring perch hole with XJ springs I’m at about 103-104" wheel base. This is with a SR flipped cruiser spring with front mount pushed .5" of the front of the frame in the front. I'm trying to remember the numbers, but I think the Xj spring's long side is 8 or 9 inches longer than a cruiser short side. I can also get another 1.5" in the back if I put the axle in the rear most perch hole. I currently use the forward-most hole in the perch; this gives me around a 102 WB.
As far as issues are concerned, everything seems to line up very well. I was able to reuse the frame shock mounts and just put tabs on the front of the axle. These mounts don't allow for a long enough shock for these springs however. The springs stick out beyond the frame in the back. My mounts are close to being flush with the back of the hole, I just put a bolt in the forward most holes on the mount and put it through the rearmost hole on the frame and welded it up, this made sure I was the same side to side.

With everyone chasing after wheelbase like we are- I would be awesome if there were more Fj43's in the market. I think I have only seen one- ever.
With my front springs flipped and my 55's in the back and my perch offset a tad, I am eeking 101 or 102. -Dustin
