v8 bellhousing ?
When putting a chevy v8 in a cruiser, I here alot of cast iron bellhousing. Is there any reason this is used over the aluminum ones, size, shape, strength?
v8 to cruiser 4speed w/plate adapter. Bill

Cast iron= old school=mucho cheaper. No special issues other than fabbing up a slave cylinder bracket. That said, I'm not thrilled with the one provided on the aluminum bellhousings, and usually end up fabbing my own anyways.
The advantage of using an AA or Downey bellhousing is using the factory Toy 4 speed fork and T/o bearing, which has a much larger face than the cheby bearing. Makes for smoother engagement. Some like the accessability of the AA bellhousing, which mimics the factory toy 4 speed and reuses the stock inspection cover. Some prefer the Downey, which offers the strength of a full circle bellhousing, kind of like the McLeod scatter shields. I have seen a cast iron bellhousing break. I have not seen an aluminum one break. Just my personal experiences. Maybe other shops will chime in on this.

Is the hole in the bellhousing that the tranny slides into sized differently between cast iron, aluminum, and LC bellhousings? Or are they all the same? I am probably imagining things, but thought that the was a difference, atleast between LC and Chevy bellhousings?

I would use a scatter shield. I believe the brand name is Lakewood. Made of 1/4" steel and will not break. I have seen aluminum and cast irons bell housing break.

There are 4 years of a SM465 cast iron bellhousing, '68 through '72. I heard the cast irons are stronger but recently I have been hearding they are actually weaker. I dig it because you can pull the cover off and see what's going on with the clutch etc.
