Last year manual transmission was offered?
I am new to the details of Landcruiser by year and am looking at getting one. I wanted to know what was the latest model that came from the factory with a manual transmission. Also, did most come with factory lockers? Where can I best research the specs and options of the older cruisers? Any years to avoid?
Thanks for any help. |

in the USA the last of the cruisers with a manula trans was the fj60 series. i think they ended in 87 or 88?! once the went to the fj62, they went to the automatics.
in other parts of the world like canada, you could get later cruisers with manuals and diesels. some of them have made it south from there and now reside in the USA.

factory lockers? i think the only ones we got in the US were on the 80 series and only up to '92. the rest of the world got cable lockers and other cool stuff for many years that we didn't.
years to avoid? depends one what you want, as klingon said. there are many body styles. each have their own ups and downs.

80 series had lockers, but not up to 92, they started with the locker option in 93. late 93 to 97 you could get electric lockers in 80 series. No cable lockers were available in the US market.

Type I am looking for
I am looking at a four door, for trail running here in Nor Cal. Nothing too crazy. I was trying to get something for around $5k but that can also be used as a DD. Right now I have a 02 Tacoma extra-cab V6 TRD 4x4 w/ 3" lift. I plan to sell it and use $5k for a new rig and the rest to put in the bank for later. I want to get a four door so my dog can go with me, he is too big for the extra cab, and still enjoy some air conditioning. I originally wanted a manual transmission but that maybe out of the question if they stopped making them so long ago. Any advice is helpful.

you should really start a new thread regarding this subject cause the 80 guys might not be looking and they'd be more help than some of us.
from what i have heard, the 93 and newer 80s are the most desirable due to the better engine and suspension/axle upgrades.

You want a 93-97 with disc rear brakes. This gets you the 1fzfe engine(more power, better mileage), full floater rear end, and the chance of e-lockers. It will be tough to find a really clean one for $5000, especially with lockers, but don't let no lockers stop you. My 80 doesn't have factory lockers, but I added an Aussie locker to the rear, and when I regear I will lock the front somehow. One thing to consider, is the cost of lifting. An 80 series has coil suspension on it, so it is much cheaper to lift with an off the shelf lift. I fit 36" bias TSL's for ~$1200 including springs, shocks and extended brake lines. I did make some various brackets and such, but that wasn't much work or money. Go for an 80, you wont regret it!

80 all the way
Thanks for all the info. I will start some more posts now that I know some basic info. I was looking on ebay and craigslist and it looks like the 95-97 have the best options. The stock lockers would be nice. My buddy just got his wholesaler lic so I hope that will help me find one of these things cheaper. I am in no hurry yet, I just got my truck up for sale. If you know anyone who wants a 02 Tacoma 4x4. Have em check http://homepage.mac.com/krump/Tacoma.html
Does anyone know what kind of gas mileage I can expect from one of these cruisers? |
