Keep as is or upgrade??

I have a California 1971 FJ40 bone stock with 3-speed on column and original paint in good shape.Except for header that PO put on because exhaust manifold cracked I believe it is ALL stock and with only 27K miles. This vehicle has tiny bit of rust in roof rail and spot about the size of a dime on the rear 1/4 where it is curved. I am thinking of putting PS,disc brakes, and a shackle reversal, OME springs, 4-speed. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should go ahead and upgrade it the way I want it or sale and get another not so original or later model that has 4-speed and such already done. Upgrades are probably going to cost in the neighborhood of $6 to $7K.What you all think.

Man, if it were mine I would keep it close to stock and not hack it up. There are plenty of 40 series out there that have already been molested and can be build into good wheeling rigs, if you want to run some tough trails. If yours is mostly original, I would go ahead with the PS PB OME disc brakes etc. but DO NOT start cutting the body for bigger tires, doing a SOA etc. There is good demand for clean original unmolested 40's. Making this into a trail rig would be a sin IMNSHO.

Keep it stock, as you mod it beyond safety issues like disc brakes then the value will go down.

It's your truck. If you want a modded 40, then modify it. If you want a pristine antique, then find a good stock exhaust manifold for it to put back on. If you don't want to cut this one, and you can sell it for more than you paid and have enough to buy another with something left over, go that route. IMO, you usually can't beat a good clean solid stocker to start a build, and now that you have it, you can't come out very far ahead by selling it to get another. If it doesn't meet your needs and satisfy your intended purpose for it in stock trim, then do what you want with it. Your the only one (and possibly your wife if your married) that has to like it. If your not getting the most enjoyment out of it that you can, then whatever you've done with it is wrong. If your still hesistant post up the VIN and see if anyone knows of anything rare or special about your cruiser.

Dude, keep it stock. I went through what you are going through and I wish I kept mine stock and got another one. As a matter a fact, I tried to sell mine and after 3 months of no bites, my mods began.

pics here: http://lslc.org/austin/bios/blumenth...ing/index.html

For the $$$ you are talking about, you can buy a cruiser already mod'd almost to your specs. You just have to look. I just sold a stock 77 with a blown motor and some body cancer for $800 with another 2F. Deals are out there.

Where are you anyway? Your sig does not say. Maybe someone in your area knows of a deal.

Oh, yea, welcome to the board. (customary greeting here).

Leave it stock, I passed a stocker today on 635 in Dallas, we were going about 70 mph, did not recognize the truck, I followed for several miles, and I remembered my stockers, which have been several........I miss them.
I passed him, and recognized the driver as an LSLC member... that is not around as often as most....we exchanged a smile and a thumbs up and I came on to Bonham.........there is something real special about the total package that Toyota put together.....something I don't think can be explained or understood until you have owned and driven one for a while......

Doesnt sound like much of a worthy cruiser to me; built, restored, or otherwise. But to help you out, I'll go ahead and buy it from you, just so you no longer have to worry about it.

stock, but the discs would be a good idea and will not detract from whatever value it might have.

Wow, I guess the vote is to keep it stock! But I'd like to see some pictures of this beauty before I comment on the subject...

I would put the OEM wheels and hubcaps, a set of 33x9.50 R15's on her and drive that good lookin' ride
This combo= no need for Power Steering and built in overdrive.

These will tuck up and clear the fenders on the rear, no need to cut.......on stock wheels that is.
JJ swears he was not doing what it looks like he is in this pic.....

I do have the OEM wheels (all 5) and have the hubcaps too. So those tires clear with no problem huh? What I have on there now are 30 x 10.50's I think, could be 9.50's. So I'm wondering about the 3-speed with those tall tires and if the gearing is low enough. You all really have me thinking now! Is there any lift on your old rig in the pictures. was considering OME or HFS because I have heard good things about ride improvement.

3 spd will work....... that said the rig in the pic was my youngest girl's DD for 6 years, I swapped a disc front axle in there and a later 4 spd trans and transfer case.....safety and ease for her to shift....the 4 spd is all syncro and one of the nicest 4 spds you will ever find.....
Those tires and wheels fit with no lift and work great.....the current owner just recently drove the truck from Durango to here and back.......2400 miles.
