SM465 problem this weekend
Thise weekend i took my cruiser out for the first time in about 2 years. So got out there shortly after dropping it off the triler the tranny began making grinding noises. Long story short the grinding noise would reduce itself when the clutch was in but wouldnt instantly go away. It did get stuck in thir gear for about 5 minutes this weekend as well.
So i pulled the trans SM465 with advance adapter and 4 speed tcase. Oil in the t case was dirty but pulled the top cover off the trans and 3rd gear i believe was chipped as well as the counter gear? I was wondering what could have been wrong to cause this wear, grinding, chipping etc. I will have pics tomarrow but looking for some ideas as upon searching i see replacements and a 3rd gear upgrade. By the way it looks like a fresh rebuild, there is surface rust but syncros just tlook too new to be used. At idle you could hear the grinding and descending the volume of the grinding was awful after one decent i called the weekend. Any ideas any links any tech. I promise pictures tomarrow i dont have too much time to get this done. thanks for any help

Sounds like the bearings out of the rear main shaft fell out in the tranny. Look for neddles in the bottem of the tranny, that would be a bad sign. Sticking in third is a sign of this. I hope this is not the case for you.

Well the trans is gone, input bearing done other bearings in ok but not great condition. The needle bearings are all galled as well as the junction in between the input and output. This was going to an AA adapter to a 4 speed case, so i'm looking for a donor trans anyone got some parts? Spare trans with good shafts so i can rebuild this thing i dont want to have to pay the prices of ne stuff unless i have to
