I have a welded rear and it is holding up just fine. Go to IH8MUD.com and go to tech links. There is a article and how to do it instructions. If welded correctly it will hold up fine.

I welded up the rear of our mini truck a couple of years ago. It works great. You should be able to get 10 to 15 thousand miles out of a new set of tires also.

Weld it all (except the pin in the center than you cannot get the clip on the axles)

I always just filled in several teeth on the spiders and side gears...never welded tham togather or to the carrier. It makes them serviceable and also gives just a little bit of play between the rear axles so it turn a tiny bit better. JMO
