D44 or fj60 axles?
I have been going back and forth for a few weeks now, trying to decide how to solve my breakage problems. My main problem is twisting off the outer birfield inside the hub, which takes out the hub, spindle, wheel bearings and everything. (i have course splined birfs and drum brakes) so I'm trying to gain discs and stronger front axles too. I already have a D44 in the backyard but I would like to keep it as toyota as possible for now, so iwas thinking 60 axles (cause i want to go wider also) my question is,will a 60 axle with longfields hold up as well as a D44 with warn shafts and 297's. A good friend of mine broke off the end of a Marfield inside the hub with his 79 20r, so i'm worried i'll still do that with longfields.

Hi Newbie
Your best bet is to convert your Drum brake axle to Discs...and get some Longfields.....these are WORLDS stronger than the Marfields your buddy has. To date only a few have been broken and TONS are running them and running them hard. You need a disc brake setup from a 79-85 Toyota Mini or from a 76-89 Land Cruiser. The mini's are MUCH easier to find in junk yards. When you get the front axle, send the birfields off as cores to Bobby Long for your Super Birfs. It is all a direct bolt up to your older Land Cruiser axle. You will need to shave a little out of the inside of your stock housing to make room for the larger birfs, but that is a no-brainer. Go to IH8MUD.COM and there is all the info you need for these conversions.

I knew someone would say something about the minitruck swap, I almost put something about that in my post, but i thought saying i wanted to go wider would eliminate that reply!
I eventually want to run 38.5 sx's so i want to add some width now if i can. When i got the D44, i wondered how to make the rear wide enough to match (after i cut it down 4.5"), and i thought about an fj60 rear, but then i realized it would be cheaper to buy a whole parts truck, take what i need off, and sell the rest. So then i figured why not just throw some longfields in the front and use it too. yes, woody has a very kick ass site, i fould it long b4 i found pirate, and i also did my pirate search to find my answer, just like i spossed to!

Can the FJ-80 birfs be turned into Long's? Not that they really need to but if they could wouldn't that make them like super strong, like way stronger than the regular long birfs? Then we would really have a super strong joint and be able to put some cash into inner axles, I know that with Long's its pretty much the same thing, but it just would seem cool.

its been my understanding that cruiser axles, except for the birf, is stronger than D44. unless you are sinking money into shafts, and u-joints, like CTM or similar. however the difference in width on the 60 axle over the 40/55 (3") is even less than you can get with off-set rims. of course axles AND rims will get you even wider. guess it really depends on how wide you want to be.

Stick with the Cruiser stuff unless you want to go real big...then do the 60's. No need to spend money 1/2 ass on a D44 over a Cruiser axle if you plan on running 38's.
To get your width, get some 2" BS wheels....

They are 100% better than stock Birfs, but everything breaks.

Your cruiser is only as good as the Muncie, New Process, Dana, or Rockwell you put into it.

Get an FJ60 rear axle(easy to find compared to the front), and use your stock front converted to minitruck discs(with longfields) and use IFS wheel hubs on it and you will be about 3" wider front and rear, then use 2" back spacing wheels and you ought to have the width you need.
Search the toyota truck section on the board for the "IFS hub conversion" and you ought to find enough info. there is a kit to do it, and also reportedly ways to do it without a kit...

i got a 60 front and the IFS hubs are coming
![]() DAMN...im even FATTER again another benefit of a 60 series front is the long side matches the minitruck longside, and any mini guys you run with will have the same axles as you, so you can swap over....unless you run with straight cruiser guys...then just keep it!!
