The Bruise!

Hello...
Once again, my name is Keith. Im currently in the midst of building a basket case FJ40 that Ive named The Bruise cuz its black and blue and rusted in the usual places.
Im a refugee from the Mud board, but Im finding this site to be a great resource for this type of build, so I thought Id post the progress here.
I had built an 88 FJ62 for my first rig. I feel that I have sort of out grown its ablilites in respect to the types of trails that I like to run most.

So the build...On a BUDGET of course!
76 FJ40
Clean the frame
repair the rust on the tub
Rattle can paint job
02 5.3L vortec (49K)
02 4L60E (re built)
Atlas 2 or 4 speed (still in question)
Self wire the motor and chassi (ill need help with this for sure)
Sag box power steering
SOA
Stretch WB
Leaf spring suspension
Axles are still in question (fj60 front/ Cruiser mini truck hybrid or D60/ 14 bolt)
36 or 37 in tires
Sounds nice and easy

Here are the pics of what's been done so far
Picked the rig up for 1700.00
It was decent...rust in the rear quarters BAD. Frame is IMMACULATE. Just very neglected.

WAIT....I cant post pics!?

Look at the top of the forum under "announcement", authored by Lance. He'll be glad to take your money.

OKAY!!!
Registered as a "red star" member....

Here we go!

Thanks to all who offered to post the pics of the build for me!

First ones are of the rig at the PO's house
Then pulling the tub for one man op
then I started on the rust on the tub. DS rear fender and rear 1/4 was the WORST. So I opted to re build it using 3/4 in angle for a frame and 18 ga sheet metal for the cover.

Then I re built the rear 1/4. I found that bending the 8 ga is a BITCH.

More of the rear 1/4...
The tape is the line I cut for the clearance. Ill bend in a lip to edge out the cut around the perimeter. I also clearanced the top of the wheel well almost 2 in.

Ive got some pics of the motor and tranny around some where. I had a TON of pics...they were lost when our computed died a couple of weeks ago.

All I could find of the vortec work I did are these after things were cleaned up...
And a pic of the 4L60E that Georg's trans guy did for me!
The motor is not as dressed up and nice and Cardinalfangs...Im just hoping that I can get it to RUN! This is my first time doing a build of this magnitude, so well see what happens.

Moving this conversation here seems like a better place for it...
From Chicago:
"Im curious cuz a DS drop would help my front DS with running the 4L60E trans."

What Tcase are you putting behind the 4L60E? I run a 4L60E/Atlas in my 40 with a pass side Dana 60. Are you concerned with drive shaft clearance? It's also going to matter what front axle you decide on as far as being able to clear the front shaft and the tranny body/pan flange.

Ill be running an Atlas, and yes I am a bit concerned with the DS in relation to the off set trans.
I decided that Ill just run the 60 series axle front and the LC/mini truck hybrid rear.
Just picked up the front from Georg today. As Im to understand, there is a skinny drive shaft of sorts...
Havent investigated into it much though.
That was why I was asking in your post on Mud. Looks interesting. Something that I had not even considered doing, nor thought was possible.

No work on the rig this weekend. Built a haunted house for halloween in the front yard, had people taking pictures and a TON of kids going through. Had a blast...right up until we went in to change and some little bastard ass kids SNAGGED my wifes dish that she's had for eternity...she was not happy AT ALL. Had sentimental value. However, there was a shred of decency, and today sometime they flipped the bowl into the back yard. There is HOPE I guess.
Started cleaning the axle. There was about 3 LBS of muck on it. Love doing that for some reason. OCD I guess.

Thanks for posting up!

Slow progress...
Did replace a section of the door/ floor pan sill. I ran out of sheeting to cap in the fender well, so I thought Id do that instead yesterday eve.

The rest of that sill is still SORT OF in tact, so Ill strip it down, spray on some rust converter and call it good.

I run a toyota truck flange at the atlas and 1410 at the diff that way I can run a small tube driveshaft to clear the tranny body.

Would you mind posting or e mailing some pics of this?
Im a little hung up on what to do with that.
Granted nothing is bolted up in the rig yet, but it is causing me some concern. The offset is pretty great to the PS of that trans.

Thanks a BUNCH for posting that info up!

It is tight for my situation but it works with the Toyota Yoke. You can see where the shaft rubbed the pan flange a bit. It fits right in that notch on full droop now.
I measured the distance from the center of the pinion on the Dana 60 to the outside edge of the frame 6"
Then measured the distance from the center line of my flipped FJ60 housing under my FJ45 to the outside of the frame rail 6.5 inches.
That would make your drive shaft even closer to the Tranny body with this setup. Just some numbers for you to think about.

Right on brotha!
Thanks for the input and the pics.

Just out of curiosity, what was the off set of your motor and trans set up?
Ive been reading 1 in off center to the DS?
I know space also gets pretty tight for the PS set up which Ill be doing a sag...Just curious how you approached that.

Thanks again.

AAAAAAH okay!
So that gives me HOPE that there will be SOME space to work with.

I have a tendency to over think things a bit. Seeing as how im NO WHERE near a point at which I should even be concerned about this potential dilemma, I should get thing lined up in the rig FIRST....

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here running a dual case set up with an auto tranny in a 40?

Would the 203 to orion work, or is the Atlas just FLAT OUT a better way to run with an auto? Space TRULY is a premium in these rigs.
