Brake Booster solution?

I recently bought a 72 fj40 and the brake booster went out promptly after I got it home.... so insted of buying the $350 rebuild kit, I found a 71 fj40 with one in it at local wreaking yard, for $125 with master cylinder. My questions is will the 71 work with my 72? What are my other options. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Booster Dewey does those LC years for $125, and zinc plating is just a bit more.

sorry, no good contact info, in Oregon or Washington State.

test it out

The one from the wrecking yard should be the exact same as the one that you're replacing, but it might also have the same problem as your current one. The only way to really know will be to bolt it up & test it out. $125 seems kind of high to me.

You should be able to use other types of master cylinders and/or boosters in your year cruiser. For example, I've got a booster/master in mine from an '83 1-ton Toyota pickup and it bolted right up with no problems. I only paid $25 for both the booster & master cyl.

Do a search - lots of discussion threads about boosters/masters.

Is there anything to be aware of when swaping in another model's booster as far as throw or PSI in sucking power?? Or is it a plug and play part? I'm sure I could find something else that I could "rig - up" but I don't want it looking like chit!

I realy appreaciate all the help guys!!

When I did my dick break conversion I used a master cylinder out of a mini truck. It bolted right up to my 71 booster and has never given me a a single problem. I consider this to be a better option because mini-truck parts are much more available than LC in the parts stores.

If you used the mini truck master cylinder, did you use the brake booster out of the MT?

I used a booster and master out of a 97 Tacoma, and it works great! I had one out of a 88 mini truck and it did not work anywhere near as well( same master in bolth cases) so get a matched set!

I thought you were using an FJ80 master cylinder? Do you have a proportioning valve?

The MC from a Taco and a FJ80 are the same thing(as far as I can tell) 1" bore, aluminum housing, single resivour. and yes I run a prop valve, and have a 2# residual valve for the rear on the way!

I had a single reservoir, no booster setup in my 1970 (mfg date: 11/69). I installed a booster and master out of an '85 toy minitruck 1ton (15/16" bore) when I went with discs in front. All I can say is: Damn! I can stop now!!! Why am I posting here? Oh yeah- I got the booster/master for $20 and a couple axle shafts- traded with Seabass44 for it.

Moral of the story: cheap stuff can get you where you need to be. Cheap doesn't always mean crappy and unsafe... (Just most of the time. )
