daily driver, towing and snow.....realistic?

hey guys my fj40 is currently in the works but i was kinda questioning the capabilities and see if my goals are realistic. it is currently sitting on full width d44/14b axles and is streched out to 101 inches, has a 350/th350/np205 drivetrain that makes ~400hp. now when i get this thing done i would like to be able to drive it daily, be able to pull my 4 place sled trailer, and of coarse that means snow. realisticly is will be 90% street 10% wheeling. now it is spring over so i will be running 37s or 38s, on h2 wheels. what would you guys recomend for tires? maybe an all terrain? i have nitto terra grapplers on my suburb and they seem to do allright. what do you guys think as far as gearing. i was thinking 4.88s. id like to keep 70 mph at about 3500 or less. i am doing a custom wiring harness and will include a trailer brake setup and i have 4wheel disc brakes on it so im not really concerned with the brakes. but more concerned with the short wheel base and drivability of it.

Why not just use the Sub to pull your sleds. The 40's wheel base(evenat 101") is kinda short for a trailer, plus being sprung over and 38's.

Missed that...but I don't know what that is. Sleds as in snowmobiles? What would the total weight be? I can't image those things are light! I don't think I would try it.

sled is about 500 lbs, so if i had 4 on there it would be about 26-2700 lbs. and yes i was thinking it could get hairy. i do use the suburb to pull most of the time but its the wifes rig. and if i go outta town to go ride it leaves her with the fj40 (not done yet) or my 94 yota 4x4 (she hates driving) i might just flat bed the yota and strech out the wheelbase and make it my winter sled hauler.

sounds like the adventure could be getting to the snowmobile parking lot, having said that, i would do it in a heart beat. i ran bfg all terrains the last two winters and it is my opinion that they work really good in the snow. they are pretty good everywhere, but not great anywhere. they are good on the highway, which if its a DD you'll be seeing plenty of pavement right? but if they are for a h1 wheel, you might be limited by what tires are available in the 16.5 rim size. id work my way backwards by figuring out what tires you can get for that wheel and then making your choice as to what is offered.

I have towed some heavy trailers with my 40. Its doable. That said, any rig ( or donkey ) can pull a trailer. Not all rigs can safely stop one. Does the trailer have electric brakes? Does your rig have disks all around? 38's are heavy tires to stop.

cheers-
Dustin

the wheels are h2 wheels so they are 17", i have 4 wheel 3/4 discs and calipers, i am building the trailer here in a month or so so it will have electric brakes and i will be trying to set the 40 up with a brake controller. and it will have a gm hydroboost and master from a mid '00 3/4 ton chevy

probly the thing that im most concerned with is the fact that im using s10 rear springs, i have a set of airbags laying around but they would get torn up if i went wheeling, and the other thing is the short wheel base.

Yes you can do it. Should you? No.

Build a rig to be a great tow rig, desert rig, rock rig, or daily driver. Try and do all of the above and its going to suck at everything.

There is a reason why a lot of people own multiple trucks.

I'm more concerned about your suspension geometry than anything thing else. Rear steer without a trailer is bad... with a trailer is scary. Same with brake dive. Have you figured out how to eliminate brake dive from your suspension?

Or worse.. how about the worry of fatigued parts now towing a trailer? What are you going to do if you have a snapped main leaf, don't realize it, and then tow a trailer?

Just a few things to think about...
