mini birf compatable

Question is: Will mini birfields work in a later model (79)FJ front axle as a direct replacement?

My '76 front axle is running minitruck knuckles, birfields and locking hubs. I believe they're all the same as J6 stuff.

My fj40 is a 79 and they fit but it far more of a pain then it forth. carbide bur the inside of the axle housing and then they fit like a champ. Not such a big deal getting them in but when you smoke a inner cage on a birf and they are all covered in grease and you can't ge them out and you have have to take off the knuckle wipers etc. you will definetlly appreciate that you ground them.
Just my 2cents.Tom

Huh?

Excuse my ignorance please...are you saying that the birfields and axles are a direct replacement? I thought you had to separate the birfs from the mini axles and put the cruiser axles back in. It's also early...the coffee hasn't kicked in yet

I hear ya on the coffee...

You still have to use your cruiser inner axles, but the birfs fit...that's what he was saying.

Yeah, you have to use the cruiser inner axle shafts.

And like Gunmetalcruz said, you also have to grind the top and bottom lip of the axle housing, where the birfield goes in, so that there's room for the larger minitruck birfield.

If it is a 79 axle (1/79 or later) you won't have to grind. The stock birfs are the same as the mini truck birfs.

In my dec 78 cruiser there was no need for grinding.
However I have heard of 12/78's that did need grinding. Stick it in and find out.

I think you only have to do any grinding if you are useing a drum brake axle. I had to grind my 74.

The only grinding that should be done is grind the u-bolts off and drop that housing for something else, sorry changed to many of those things, hate drawbacks.

Nope, my '76 had disc brakes from the factory, and the housing needed grinding for the mini birfields to fit.

Someone else said it's '79 and up cruiser axles that fit the minitruck birfields. That sounds right.

Yeah, you're right... Every single one of Bobby Long's customers are idiots for not changing their axles.

I'm saving up for a 60/70 myself... but For many, a birfield works just fine. ESPECIALLY a Longfield.

Let me have set of those for 1 day, it wont be good. I know where all you are coming from, i ran those for about 4 years couldn't afford to switch. But if you can try to stay around the stock width, it helps. There wasn't any of those longfields out there, I was testing that cv unlimited crap thats why i switched, those dand 44s with the chrome moly shafts and ctms are very impressive though.

Yes, we all know CVU's birf aren't as strong as Bobby's... They're also on gen 4 or 5 now, and they are getting more and more similar, with Bobby's being a little softer still.
