Pay your tickets & info on 1991 FJ80 diesel FS

Watch out, this is a long one but it's cruiser related....

In college a few years ago I pulled over and it turned out I had a $50 ticket that I was aware of but never paid. The result, a vehicle search (of course), and a fat $300 ticket. Well, just the other day Bennett and I had gotten word of a mysterious 1991 FJ80 that had a 1HD-T non-USA turbo diesel installed into it. About 30 miles away from it, guess what, I get pulled over for no apparent reason (other than probably having a foriegn car, long hair, and California plates) and as it would be I have a $50 "failed to have a current inspection sticker" looming from New York State (where I lived last over a year ago now), that not only causes me to get arrested, but thrown in jail. All while Bennett, who is a pretty down to earth guy, is hanging out in jail's front lobby while I proceed to get bailed out and at this point we decide to turn home instead of completeing the mission (as it's well into the evening already by the time I'm out). First time ever "arrested," the police are very nice but I don't ever want to be in that situation again.

Anyways, this morning I had my "court date." Good news is they knocked down the ticket and the fine is only $150, and I made it there and back safely.

After the appearance I decided to finally complete the mission by finally going to see the truck. So I get there, for those of you who are subscribed to the LCML and remember a post a few weeks ago, I posted the truck for sale, "1991 FJ80 converted to 1HD-T diesel, 420,000k , $13,500 OBO."

I know this is going to sound cheezy but despite some rumors, the truck does in fact have 431,000K but it is literally immaculate, not a peep of rust, original two tone (very good looking) paint, ARB rear with compressor and 2.5 gallon tank. The conversion was literally flawless, it was done by a LA area guy (who might (have?) worked at TLC, who did the conversion on his own. It used a 1HD-T and the A440F tranny and part time case that the diesel engine were originally mated to. The engine was purchased from Specter, and installed by (not sure if I have his name completely right) Armando Nunuz. The truck belonged to a guy in Houston who sold metal buildings and covered a huge territory, hence the miles. I guess when the original engine shit the bed, he had this custom 1HD installation. Honestly I can say that it was possibly one of the cleanest, nicest, and most professional installation I've ever seen. Everything was documented from what fuel seperator and air cleaner were used, complete electical diagrams. Everything was documented, what parts, where they came from, reciepts, then lengthy typed explanations as to how, what to do, literally everything was flawless. The interior (despite rumors I'd heard) was immaculate, the seats were new. It had boost and EGT gauges, everything was functional, even cruise control.

Very cool! I also got to drive the beast, it honestly hauled ass. I took a look at the mainenance records (there was a log of everything done to it, when and what) and some time around 385,000 miles they weaked the turbo's waste gate so even around town it was pushing about 11 lbs of boost. The truck was incredebly smooth, and did great with plenty of power at 60 mph. So anyways, I thought I would pass along the message on the truck. the owner was a very nice guy, it's his first crusier but I think he had similar feeling as to the ones I have when he picked it up. Apparently he still owes about $10,000 in payments on it and his company (which is I guess the reason he moved to Utah) bought him a company car so he's making payments on a truck he hardly uses. So I thought I'd pass it along. I expected some sort of ratty truck with "surely something major" wrong on it just because of the milage and took a good look at it (I was there about an hour) and couldn't really find anything. There are some small things, a small crack in the windshield, and some small holes in the center console where it looked like a cell phone might have been formerly mounted. And that's about it. The guy has had lots of phone calls but mostly from tire kickers who are trying to seriously low ball him because of the milage. And though he seems pretty nice it he says he's very tired of these guys and at this point would rather trade it into a dealership for less than sell it to someone who's trying to low ball him strictly because of prinicple. So I thought I'd relay it along, his phone is 435 722-2531, name Matt, in Roosevelt Utah in NE Corner of the state. He says he paid $13,500 for it and I think would probably let it go for something above $10,500. To me it seemed like one of those very well cared for trucks that are occationally encounted with about 200,000 miles. Also, for coolness factor I would say it was probably identical to driving a Aussie or Euro spec 1HD-80. So I guess I've driven one of those!

Here's a set of picts he gave me on disk. click here He promised to email some shots of the engine when he gets them, which I'll post. Engine was very cool, prectiaclly no smoke, sounded just like the Isusu 4BD1-T in the Isuzu box trucks. Thought I'd pass it along!

I also spotted a Mil 3/4 ton trailer (for $1200 with some rust ) but a few pretty straight looking full size Willys wagons and pickups sitting in driveways and in fields. Gosh I love rural Utah.

I agree on the unpaid ticket deal , I'm always on the other end, having to tow & impound some poor guys car because of it.

We got into a long thread on the LCML a few years back, with me trying to caution against taking a wrecked or rusty 40 and slapping the VIN onto a different one, I DON'T KNOW ALL THE STATES' RULES....but in Texas this is totally illegal, and the vehicle is subject to seizure and impoundment until the details are clear with the DMV........been on the towing end more times than I can count.

HC/Andre-

name of converter guy is close enough, but he vehemently dislikes press of any type so we should drop his name from the discussion. $14,000 plus parts will get you can conversion these days. A.N. uses all OEM parts so no wonder it looks OEM.

typically, 1HD-T's are much quieter than Isuzu, Cummins, 3B's, etc. When I bought my engine from A.N. we ran it in his back yard on a stand (fueled via Dave Collie's 80 from which this engine came from) and at idle you could easily talk over it. When the turbo kicked in only then did the noise take over (kinda Mad Maxest with the on/off blower trick). 1HZ's also run quieter than most (I have a no sound film of one running on my car hauler in June, take my word for it)

The truck may be clean, but still it has:
430K on the steering column, diffs, door latches, etc and or 11+ years of use.

Rick, very stealth with the "A.N."

The former owner's name is Charley something, not Dave Collie. Cool to know that people like this A.N. character exist. Only from Brasil!

Believe it or not, all the doors, windows, etc etc all function about perfect with very little use / abuse. But I do agree on the diffs, steering column, etc. A couple other things I forgot to mention, OME either soft or medium. Handled well but swayed a little. Custom front bumper sort of ugly and hangs down low but beefy with a 8274 in it. Racor fuel filter with glass bowl (a serious perk, BTW if anyone is interested I found a source of these new, 100, 200, 400 series for $70), 16" 5 spoke mags and newer Michelin street tires. Also had a non-USA fuel cuttoff button, I think it's an emergency device. It also had some custom "pinstriping" ala similar to how your truck looks after Kane Creek. But other than that was pretty clean.

The guy who had the conversion done is Dave Collie. He may have sold it to someone else, but that's Dave Collie's old truck.

Rick I hear ya ...A truck with 430k on it in 11 years means he never shut it off. that's 40k a year.

Glad you got to see it Andre...
