What is the difference between the 96 3.4 v6 and later models? Trd and everyone lists a supercharger for a 96 4 runner but not a 96 tacoma. They list 97 and up tacoma....Whats the deal? I want to put a supercharger on my truck eventually but dont want to order only to find it doesnt fit, doesnt work or causes major re working.... My engine is a 96 2x4 automatic tacoma engine with a 4x4 manual harness and computer if that matters....
It's all in ECU differences. You can get it to work if you swap in the later 97 ECU, but its still not going to be quite right. It'll physically bolt right up, but the ECU is the difference...
Like everyone is saying, its the ECU. Not sure whats involved it getting it to work. Mike at ORS helped set up a 1996 for a friend of mine. His s/c is the older grey one. I've got the newer black s/c on my 3.4 (2000 engine, 2nd gen 4-Runner) and they are completely different. We are both working on a factory hood scoop mod right now and his s/c seems taller than mine. Both are 2nd gen 4-runners without body lift.
All you need is the URD kit for 96-97 trucks to go along with the S/C and you'll be good. I've already asked gadget about this quite awhile ago. But with a higher mileage engine like mine (150K at the time) he recommended not to S/C it
