Coouple of places i've seen says it stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. Changes shift points when pullin a load to keep rpms from falling off beteween shifts for a smooth pull. Still not sure if it really works or not, and on my 99 i can't tell a difference one way or the other. Just my $0.02

Ect

On my 03' It does change the shift points(up and down) and it seems(maybe) it might raise the torque converter stall speed slightly(maybe 200 RPM) but it might be my imagination

Electronically Controlled Transmission. You use it more when traveling thru mountains and/or pulling loads. But next time you are traveling up a steep hill on the interstate and the truck starts to loose speed and bog down slightly hit the button and it will downshift a little but not all the way like if you turned Overdrive off.
