'96 gear ratio
anybody know what the gearing is in the rear axle of a 96 2-by? ive looked everywhere (including not on this site). maybe im a tard but i got nothing. i wanna run 33's and i want to make sure i have a ratio that could handle it. cuz i know theres more to big tires than just wheel-well clearance.

Depends on engine and transmission selection, along with other variables. You should be able to figure it out with the gear ratio code chart. |

just jack up one tire? i jacked up both, popped it in neutral, spun the shaft, and tried to count. but when i spun the wheel i got like a little over two rotations of the shaft. shouldnt the shaft spin whatever the ratio is for one rotation of the wheel? maybe it didnt work cuz i had both up.

With an open diff, if you spin one tire, the opposite side will usually spin the opposite direction instead of the driveshaft moving at all. From "Erik's Toyota Differential Info" in the aforementioned link:
For "open" diffs: * Block the tires at one end of the vehicle to keep it from rolling, and then jack up a tire on the other end. * Place the transmission in neutral and release the parking brake if you are checking the rear diff. * Spin the tire exactly TWO full revolutions while at the same time counting exactly how many revolutions the driveshaft spins (marking the driveshaft and tires beforehand will make it easier to count revolutions). * The number of revolutions the driveshaft spins is your gear ratio. If it spins just over 4 times, then the ratio is probably 4.10; 4-1/3 = 4.30; 4-1/2 = 4.56; just under 5 = 4.88; 5-1/3 = 5.29, etc." I would imagine even the 4.11s would be marginal with the smaller 2RZ, as would 3.90s. With anything (numerically) lower, it would suck- no low range and a tall first gear with little torque like that would suck ass off road. Take advantage of the fact that you only have one axle to put gears in, and put in a locker and some 4.88s.
