Diesel 4BT or 6BT

Anyone have thoughts on either the 4BT or 6BT Diesel Engine as a swap for a 3.4L Engine on a 1999-2001 Tacoma?

you can make it work with the 4bt. as in, it would fit. and with a 4bt you can run all the popular chevy and ford 5spd granny trannys. would be a very awsome swap, but NOTHING bolt on about it. probly the more difficult of engine swaps. but theres a website forum for 4bt swaps. google it

Would you recommend it for Rock Crawling? The engine must be very heavy probably sticks well below where it should.

The 4bt would be a sweet swap. I has TONS of torque for crawling. It can get bolted to the ford/chevy 4/5 speeds and have alot of options for power mods.

What I am afraid of is, the extra torque twisting the frame and the axles if they aren't dana 60's. I could get custom axles to fix that problem, but the frame is kind of a problem?

What are you smoking?!

A 6bt weighs about 1100lbs by itself. My '91 Dodge W250 regular cab weighs just over 6,000lbs total with a full tank (20 gallons) of diesel and a cheapo tool box in the back. I weighed my rig at a truck stop last week because I'm trying to find new front springs that ride a little better. The 4BT's weigh around 750/800lbs depending on who you ask.
My front axle weight - 3610 lb
My rear axle weight - 2480 lb
(weights are actual - from a CAT scale. Not mfg specs or intardnet rumor)

Tacoma curb weight - about 3600 lbs from looking at mfg specs
(that's the whole damn truck, not just one axle)

So you can see a Cummins truck's front axle curb weight is about the same as your total curb weight. Light is GOOD for wheeling, thats why Toyotas can go places I can't.

By the time you upgraded the rest of your Taco's suspension and drivetrain to handle the weight/torque of a B series Cummins, there wouldn't be anything stock left on the truck. If you want to do a diesel conversion, get something that either came U.S. spec with a diesel, or a truck over 25 years old. IMHO you'd be ruining a perfectly good Toyota trying to shoehorn a Cummins into it and it would be nearly impossible to ever make EPA legal.

If you want to do it, go ahead, but you're essentially trying to build a Dodge (which has a 6BT and dana 60/70 rears) out of a Toyota. What's the point of trying to reinvent the wheel?

This guy is clueless. He's a poser and a troll from TTORA.

He has no clue what he wants and can't afford to do it anyway. Previously he wanted to put in D60s into his Taco, but was just going to "use his current Toyota gears in them". Seriously, he's that clueless.

Markie, go back to TTORA. You are not ready for Pirate yet.

When you do about a year or two of research on what it will take to put a 4BT into a rig(and what it costs), then call me and I will teach you the rest.

Hey Scotty, if this guy's clueless then I don't feel bad hijacking his thread...
1)What's the weight distribution front-to-rear with a 4bt in an FJ?
2)How do you get around emissions testing?

P.S. Hats off to you for getting a 700r4 to cooperate with a 4bt and a toyota T-case. "Complicated" is an understatement.

Weight is roughly 750-800 lbs on the engine. Its about 200lbs heavier than the stock one. The 700R4 coversion isn't all that tough. Its basically a cut down 2WD output shaft with Downey adpater on the ass. Advanced Adapters bought out a huge supply of Downey's adapters recently, so that is where to get them. We use a split Tcase form a 62 series to get it to work, fab the shift linkage to work(that is a bitch) and then set it all up. The TB cable is extremely moody and needs to be damn near perfect to get it to work correctly and not up-shift too soon or too late.

Emissions testing: I live/work in a smog free county out in CO. No emissions testing on gas powered rigs out here. Only diesels. Since the FJ60/80 is originally a gas powered rig, its exempt. I do set them up to be able to pass an emissions test though. Emissions testing out here is nothing like CA.

Oh, and "Markie". You can eat a dick.

I really liked the "galacticly stupid" comment, if the TTORA forum is calling markie that his stay here should be both short and entertaining.
