TRD and standard diff swapable?
I just picked up a pair of brand new TRD axles from the Dealership for my 85 4runner and I heard they have the 4:30 gears in them. I already have 5:29's to drop in them so I have a question.
I am building my wife's 97 4runner up for the debut/pics of our (shrockworks) new front bumper and sliders for that model of 4R/taco. I am looking to put on a 2-2.5" lift and 32-33" BFGs and I need to see if I can drop the 4:30 gear in the rear of that 97 4runner diff (non TRD) and find a front 4:30 R&P. thanks, Nick |

So, basically, it sounds like what you are trying to do will work, as long as you use the right pinion flange.

the Taco 8" elockers have 10 8mm bolts securing the ring gear. The "8.4" or non-TRD have 12 10s. Both are technically an 8" ring gear. There is no way to make them interchangable and frankly no point in trying since you can just swap out the complete assemblies for under a grand. 4runners have used the same rear diff from their first generation to present. Most do not have the elocker. Why Toyota didn't use this, much stronger, axle assembly on the new Tacoma is a mystery to me
