I dont know if this is worthy of pirate, but I thought id share my 2001 4runner conversion with you folk.

First off, im going to admit my shear stupidty of buying a 2wd, but i was 20 at the time, had hardly any credit at all and the 4wds that I looked at would not accept my loan applications, but this dealer did and I decided to go ahead and get this truck,

the Lowdown.

I started modding this 4runner back in Aug of 2006 with the intent to go ahead and try and make it somewhat capable with a locker, sliders, and a front bumper. its been like that for a year now and also has 33s, and some other bs.

Now the truck has ARBs, 4.56 gears cryoed, 5:1 inchworm lefty with cryoed output shaft and front range offroad twinsticks.

only problem, i do not have the compressor installed so im in 4wd open right now, still better then 2wd locked hi

on to the process.

first step was putting the tcase in with a budbuilt crossmember and the prerunner adapters on to the tailhousing end of my 2wd transmission

This conversion was ment for tacoma prerunners so we ran into some issues with my tailshaft being too long and my speed sensor (which is fucked up right now anyways) not being in the right position to read the gear.

tail housing off and you can see the sensor on the right

sensor plugged in, well yeah its way far back

here is the problem, those 5 or so teeth on the gear ring before the tail shaft is what the sensor is supposed to read, see how far the sensor is from that? thats what is delaying this, and no way in hell i would have attempted this install as it is more fab work then im capable of.

Now the tube adapter built by advanced adapters was able to be connected.

about the only wheeling pic I have of my truck, granted its an easy trail

and it was done in 2wd lo range before I had the front end connected.

I do plan to take the truck to Holy Cross City and Chinamens Gulch to test out the lockers and 5:1 to see how well I can actually drive a truck built this way.

Do give me any opinions you may have even if its about me buying a 2wd in the first place, i prob deserve it :smokin:

with the front end, wasnt too bad, same frame with essentially holes for the front diff, slid the CVs in place and hubs and all was in within a couple of hours.

bolted up front shaft and im rollin.

just gotta get the compressor set so I can activate both lockers and actually do something else.

He diddn't "convert" to IFS. The truck was already IFS. Just missing the 4wd components. All he had to do was bolt in the diff and axles. Or did you convert to Tacoma manual hubs?

But I think you'll be kicking yourself for not going solid axle. You say you diddnt do it because its your DD? A properly setup SAS will drive almost as good as IFS. Not THAT much of a difference.

yeah Ive seen some nice setups that ride well, one here in town has full width diamonds with 8" centers, with leaf fronts and 4 link rear.

though the truck will mainly be an expedition rig. I will probablly build a buggy next or get a tacoma prerunner, do the same thing as far as drivetrain goes but go with diamonds land cruiser centers, longs and outers, and some other goodies

Twinsticks are from front range offroad. to have them fit we had to heat up and bend to the left. works great!

Noob question here, I havent worked on newer toyota's much other than replacing the exhaust mainfold with a LCE header, my wifh has a 97 2runner it is the most reliable vehicle we have ever owened! Anyways, I purchased a 96 taco that was rolled, i bought the truck for the 3RZ for my 85 runner, but I also want to upgrade my wife's 97 2runner to 4x4, the previous owner sold the knuckles, hubs, coilovers and cv's. So my question is can i use the 2wd knuckle and just get a 4x4 hub or do i need the knuckle and hub? Or do you just knock out the dust cover on the 2wd hub and bolt up the diff and cv? I am suprized that the frame has all the hangers there already! The donor truck had manual hubs...

the 2wd knuckles/spindles have 2wd wheel bearings, you will need a different set of wheel bearings to accompany a manual hub cv and the aisin hubs, best by aquiring an entire front end from a wrecked early tacoma with the manual front end from a wrecking yard.

since you have everything else, it would be easy from there to get it done, rear driveshaft might be a problem though, just need to find another 97 4runner rear shaft to bolt up,

is the 4runner a 4cyl like the tacoma or a v6?
