My Polished Turd. . . . 1997 4Runner

Well, after buying a house in town and not having nearly the space for all my toys, and rides, and trailers i decided it was time to do something a little different. ive sold off my trailer, and parted out a lot of the last rig for a down payment on the new house. so after figuring out how i could get that thing going again i decided it would be better to just start with a new ride. so i picked up a 1997 3.4/5 Speed/4wd 4runner with 108k on the clock for $3000. it has some problems which ill bring up later, but it was wrecked about 8 years ago and has a rebuilt title. this one will be smogged, and registered, and insured and "streetable" not to say it will be 100% legal rolling down the road, but it will be as close as i can get. . . .think the silver bullet. . . . .anyway. heres the plans, using some new and some recycled parts i hope to have it at rubicon by the roundup if not earlier.

1997 4Runner 3.4/5-Speed/4wd 108k miles

FRONT
GM Dana 60 5.38 ARB
3 Link
FOA 16" Resi triple-rates (tuned)
2x4" FOA Air Bumps
Creeper Joints on every link end including Panhard
Lower Links 2.50x.375 ~42" Long
RCV Dana 60 Birfs
35spl warn hubs with longfield slugs for extended wheeling trips.
PSC HA kit including pump/resi/ram/lines/cooler
HAD D60 to Toy Flange and .250 balanced driveline.
WFO Hi Steer arms 3/4" Heims under the arm tierod, above the arm draglink

REAR
14 Bolt 5.38 ARB
63" Chevys
Ballistic 63" Chevy kit
FOA 14" Emulsion Shock (tuned) outboard
2x4 FOA Air Bumps
HAD 14B to Toy Flange .250 balanced driveline

shooting for a 115" wheelbase and am planning on running 40" Kevlars on 17x9 Cragar Soft 8s with weld-on beadlock.

DRIVETRAIN

3.4L 108K (supercharged if money holds out)
Poly Bushing Motor Mounts
Sky Oil pan kit
PNOF York Bracket Basic Kit
200amp 1 wire GM Alternator
Yellow Top/Ruff Stuff Box
Stock R150F w/3.0L R150 tailhousing (the current one is cracked, and i have a free 3.0L tailhousing)
Marlin 3.0L Adapter
Marlin 23spl total spline input 2.28
Marlin XD 10* clocked dual case adapter
Marlin XD 4.7 Gears
Longfield Chromo Output
F/R triple drilled flanges
TG Twin Sticks
TG Single Stick
TG Shifter Knobs
FROR Style 1/2" Crossmember w/ Frame Mount Poly Bushings
Marlin VSS
ABS Delete while keeping Cruise/Speedo
F150 Fuel Tank
Sky 1 ton Brake adapter and a 1 ton master cylinder
Possible tcase brake or maybe just a line-lock, not sure yet.

Also not looking for a flat belly, but ill tuck it as much as possible while not chopping the floor.
the plan is to do just as ErikB did and keep this thing comfortable, keeping A/C and Cruise.

there will be a full interior cage as well as what i want to call "tree sliders". bars that run down the full length of the roofline on both sides as well as down the A pillar and into the fender/engine cage. also will have front and rear armor and my M8000.

oh ya this one will be low like the last build, new front frame section etc. looking for a 26" belly at road pressure with 6" up front minimum, and 6+ up rear. no body lift.

a lot of this will happen when my superduty sells. but it will sell, so im not too worried.

ill take some more pics tomorrow when its light. but here a few.

Sweet bling on the doors. I love the Antracite color. I just wish Toyota would have used a better quality clear coat on it to keep it from fading and peeling.

Subscribing....

26" frame height is easily doable without cutting the frame off anywhere. Erik is at 23" on 37s. I should be at 23.5" with 37s also. I have 5" of up travel in front and 6" rear.

Very nice. I'm starting to look for a 1996-2000 4Runner for my next build. Going to be a lot more docile than what I'm riding now but will still be very capable. I like how these third gen 4runner are turning out. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

no auto. . . .those blow up haha

im not set 100% on the 14 Bolt, but they just dont break. i really want to find something that has a cable ebrake setup inside the disc and about 67" wide. i would like to find a late model 14B with the ebrake stuff and discs. plus, with a SC on there i should be able to pull the 40s with 5.38.

I don't see a problem with 5.38's and a 5 speed 3.4 with a SC, my 2.7 with the auto does just fine (it'd be better with a SC, but it's livable)

Looking forward to seeing this built! It's not exactly where I thought you were headed, but this should be good anyway.

ya callen, the taco/runner framers are a lot nicer than the previous generations like my truck and your old one. you probably wont have to touch the frame. it didnt look like Mossyrocks gained a whole lot of clearance really at all over the old frame rails, just strenght, which isnt a bad thing.

and my predictions haha:
no HAD front flange cause your old setup worked cherry and never broke so i think youll use it again. plus its already laying there.
SPOOL in the front, i believe the ARB in the rear though.
go with a bushing at the frame end on the panhard, and a flex joint or something on the axle end. once you have it set in the build process it wont ever loosen up and the bushing should take out some road feel id think. worse case comes and it needs to be adjusted i dont know why, just order some joints and mod the panhard.

everything else sounds pretty standard and you have a bunch of it already. ill come over and check out the ride sooner than later. work just told me today that were now doing 12s. went from 8s to 9s to 10s and now 12s for awhile. no fuckin life! and im never gunna get to build my truck. oh well

edit: what was going to tell you the other day was to title this thread, "cleaned up from the street up"

I have 16 creeper joints to use, so I'll use them where ever I can. And 90% or the boing will come from sale of psd. And I'll arb it front and rear for sure. Why not?

I like the 'hot for teacher' although I don't get it hahah.

its not the motor that will be a PITA(especially with the super charger) its the auto tranny searching for the right gear constantly in the mountains

and i see you have the 5 speed, so ill STFU good luck with 5th gear though its a decent overdirive (0.838), the earlier model you refer to does have a closer to 1:1 ratio i belive though??

well, got an airbox on the way, and getting it smogged tomorrow. also bought a fan clutch and ordered a new fan for it as well. im over the "flex fan" that doesnt flex and sounds like a jet taking off with every shift.

im getting anxious about this thing.

tomorrow and friday im going to torch the old truck and move all the goodies over to the new house, and maybe fire up the plasma early next week.

just a heads up with the 60 cvs, they are very sensitive to angles more than 45*
