big people and first gens, how do they fit?
Just wondering if anyone had any cool ideas on making 1st gen trucks comfortable for larger people. Im no giant at 6 feet tall but ive gone through 3 different seats in my 79 and have tried 2 different "custom" (me getting pissed and welding stuff) seat rails and i can never get it to go back far enough or sit low enough.
i tried mr2 seats on custom rails i built and they wouldnt go back far enough, i am now using the stock bench which after i drilled out a couple more adjustment holes will go back far enough but wont sit low enough or recline enough to be comfortable. I also welded in cadillac seats where the lowest i could get them my head literally stuck out the sunroof ![]() dont tell me to buy a 4runner thats not the point, im sure i cant be the only average sized person with a 1st gen whose had this problem.i know its not tuesday but thanks for any info or tech, and yes i did search.

I'd suggest cutting the roof and back of the cab out. That's the only way I am comfortable in a first gen. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2

My first gen had factory buckets and it wasn't cramped. Had a buddy that was 6"3 rid passenger and he never complained.

No way your 6' you look like an oompa loompa
![]() Op look into a set of prp's or mastercrafts/ beards I'm 6'1" 225 lbs and have about 4" above my head in my 2nd and 3rd gen. Yes I know you have a 1st gen but the seats I listed can come in low seating mount them close to the floor and you shouldn't have a problem. A buddy is 6'2" and has 2nd gen sr5 seats in his first gen with plenty of room. Another buddy is also about 6'2" and has BMW z4 seats he got from an auto body shop and they sit really low. And when I sit in either of the first gens I have plenty of room.

It might be the SR5 seats I put in, but they work fine and sit low enough to clear most anyone ive let drive the beast. |

Cut the back of the cab out, that's what I did and problem solved being 6'3" and 230. I also run 2nd gen 4runner seats with factory mounts in a 3rd gen truck.

I got my 1st Gen with a pair of recovered Pontiac Fiero seats with stock tracks.
Before ![]() After ![]() http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...e=8&highlight= Plenty of room. We have some PRP seats coming for another 1st Gen build. I am hoping they will have just as much room.

some how my buddy that is 6'7 fit in my first gen with stock bucket seats. He sold the truck to me so he could find a second gen extended cab to be more comfortable and ended up with a fj80 instead.

You just deal with it if you like the first gen! I'm 6'11 260 and drove mine for 4 yrs with crx seats mounted on the floors, it was OK. I then cut the back and top off and moved my seat back ALOT.

put down the welder and think about it. if you made "custom" seat rails twice and you still couldnt get the seat to go where you wanted then you are doing something wrong!!! |

I'm small at 5'10" and have sr5 85 seats. There nice but with my curret interior cage even I want more room. Fixing my cage give me another 2". I have back issues and a full day usually kicks my ass. I've tried several seats. I'm saving for a set of nice suspension seats. May be 4-600$ but they sit low, have thin backs and are comfy as shit. If I was 6ft or more and live outside of Oregon my back would be cut out. Last edited by RcBro; 06-29-2012 at 05:09 PM. |

Man, this is a tough one. I'm 6'2", not big only 170 lbs, and I love my 1st gen daily driver with 2nd gen SR5 Sport seats. Half doors sure make it "feel" bigger, but that's only a summer fix. I guess you just get used to it.

Rcbro and drewp i probably am doing someething wrong, even with the sliders on the floor the angle of the cushion was slanted towards the front of the truck so it felt like i was sliding out of them all the time, and my legs still werent comfortable. My big issue is not being able to move a seat back far enough, my mr2 seats were mounted damn close to the floor and they would just hit and rub against the rear of the cab, they woulda been "good enough" had the foam in them not been completely destroyed. I get frustrated when after like 3 months of downtime i hop back in the truck and all i can think is "man this thing runs great but i wish i was a midget" also i was gonna cut the back out but im worried about my heep getting jacked while im surfing, so i try and keep it as enclosed as possible. And i only have minimal body damage so far so id like to keep it semi stock looking until i roll it. I like that lowering the floor idea, dont know why i didnt think of that... i may take out the bench, put a toolbox where the passenger seat goes (with like a cushion and small back, because fuck it i dont sit in the passenger seat ) and get a suspension seat and cut out the floor, see how much room i can get.craigslist time!

My friend has those exact seats. I have more room than him but he is not as tall as I am so it works for him but damn nice seats. I think you are right about the thin back, that my be why they seem to work great in my situation.
