My buddy replaced his head gasket (22re) and he pulled the distributer and everything apart with out marking anything. I aligned the chain at TDC as the manual says but it was exaust not compression(manual didn't say which). We got it to idle for a second more like sputter but it cranked. but now i can't get it to run i think i just need to set all the marks at TDC compression but just want to make sure before i pull it all apart..?

if it is on exhaust stroke, how about 180° the distributor?

OR

Just get compression stroke when you assemble.

if the crank mark is lined up, it can only go in 2 ways. if 1 doesnt work flip the distrib 180#. and it will.
