I have a 1988 four runner. 22re 4X4. Is there any thing in the vin # that will tell me what 5sp trans that I have? I don't have the 0ld trans. I bought one from a salvage yard and it installed OK but the shifter comes out up under the dash. Needless to say I cannot use it.

You used to have a W56 and now it sounds like you got a G52. Take it back and get the right thing. Does the t-case shift lever come out from the tranny?
I don't give a rat's ass but somebody's going to tell you to not ask this here. You'll get more feedback in the Toyota section.

Does the tranny have a large round rubber plug in the bottom center of the bellhousing?
If so, you may have an R151, which is a very desirable tranny to have..........And which usually sell for a little more than the other trannies........ Oh yeah, is the bellhousing integral with the tranny, or does it look like it is bolted to the front of the tranny? I know my W50 out of the 1980 4x4 is 5" shorter than my R151 and the shifter is a little more forward on it........ I can email you some pics of different tranniies showing some differences if you want to drop me a line.... [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: Cracker ]

That would be a good set of pictures for everybody to see. A write up on how to tell the difference between diffrent toyota transmissions would be awesome. <IMG SRC="smilies/idea.gif" border="0">

Ok, guys....I'm at work now...2nd shift....so I'll send you pics when I get home...
I'm working on my little homepage, and yes, I thought that would be one of the write-ups I'd have.... <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Oh yeah....Look at the trim tag riveted in the back center of your firewall. It should tell you what the truck originally came with...most likely a W56. [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: Cracker ]

On the trim tag it's the numbers/letters that follow "A/TM" it should be like "xxxx/xxxx." With "A" being axle size and ratio and "TM" being transmission. Milan
