22re, stock 5 speed, dual cases, Dana 60's w/ 4.88's, and 38.5" TSL's.
I originally decided on 4.88's when I thought I was gonna have an auto tranny and a 350 motivating my rig.
The current gearing seems *ok* on the trail in low/low, but moving around in 2wd H is pretty pathetic.
Even running around Gray Rock 2 weekends ago, from trail to trail I still had to run 2wd Low (front case only) just to get around from place to place and not bog down too much.
Would it even be worth considering stepping up to 5.13's, or 5.89's?
Keep in mind too - I intend to step up to 39.5" tires when these 38.5's get retired, so the problem will only get worse.
HA HA HA! I get to pick on DRM! I drove to Moab a couple times, to New Mexico, All over CO, and to South Dakota with that! That was an 22RE with 4.88's, and 39.5's!
I think your motor isnt running worth ..... Since I could run 65-70 mph at 5k feet.
However, in answer, I would probably go to the 5.89's.

i went with the fror housings and bobby long/arp..etc, etc... instead of the 60's since i can barely get up the hill with my 'lightweight'' drivetrain and 5.29's/37's as it is....

personally David,
I would leave the 4.88s. It is not worth the coin to change your gearing just for that tiny extra difference. If anything, just throw in some gears in the rear case and call it done. I dont see alot of scenarios where you will have to be in 2 Hi to get anywhere. If anything, toss the first case in low to cruise around the parks.
I'm in the same boat - since my 60 front came with stock 4.88's, mydecision to run them was influenced heavily by only having to buy one rear et of gears
Well, it looks like you've made up your mind. However, if you decide to peruse changing the ring-n-pinion again my vote is for 5.89s when running a 38 or larger tire. I have a 22ret with a d44 and d60 loaded with 5.89s. I've run 38.5 SX's, 37s MTR's and 39'' krawlers.
get some 6.17s. my buddy is really hard on his junk and has 6.17s dan60 and 70 rear. dual cases with 4.7s and 44in TSL's he broke the t case before the gears
Okay so it was toy axles, and on a PU. I am at a higher altitude (I think...) and running a 39.5. My point was that the motor he's running is probably about 1/2 dead already, and thats a lot of the problem. I was running a strong RE, cam, intake work, larger AFM, header, etc.
i also am running a 22re and a 5speed. originaly i started with 5.13's and 38x12.50 sx's (really just under 37") and it was terrible going up hills on the freeway. i then went to 5.43/5.38 and it was way better but i think it could be better yet. i didn't trust the pinion on the d44 with the 5.89's. that is why i chose the 5.38. i just installed some 39.5 iroks and wish i had lower gearing for the highway but think i will live with it. if i was running d60's not a 44 i would definatly go with a 5.89's. i don't think pinion strength is going to be an issue with a 60 and a 22re.
i run 60's with a 22re and 42tsl's. with my front box in low i can still run 50 mph in 5th gear and its plenty strong. i guess my tire size helps? but even in high, high it still runs along ok. i didnt add much to the discussion haha sorry
im running toy turbo, 60's with 40'' tsl and 5.86's it works but sometimes i wish i should have gone bigger gears there is no need for my truck to do 75 + mph.
i run 37's, 22re and 4:30's. it sux but its still driveable. i am just driving mine until the engine blows. when it does i will have to decide on if its staying 4 banger and maybe buy weak 5:29's.... i say leave your gears till your motor dies and replace it with some more power.
if you regear see if the 6:17;s are strong enough...
DRM....you are asking a stupid question and you already know the answer. You have a 60.....so either do 617 or 717. If I kept the 22RE and that tire, it would be 717. check this out http://gearinstalls.com/617front.htm
I've got 60's and 39.5 swampers. I went with 5.86 gears in mine. Its barely enough, thankfully it gets trailered. I usually use my stock low range to run around in on the road, slow yes but much more responsive and easier on the clutch. The only difference is I have a 3.0 in mine, but its pretty micropowered....

Actually if u have ever seen the pinion there is still alot of beef on there. I have 2 buddies runnning 7.17's on their junk. They r breaking front 60 shafts right and left before even having to worry about the pinion. Alot of guys that have hight performace rails run 7.17's with well over 500hp with no problems eaither. :shaking:
