I finally got my 86 22rte running, had been stolen and many wires hacked, I dont know if my turbo is working correctly. My turbo light comes on at 4000 rpms but no noticeabe increase in power. Ive heard bad things about stock turbos, mine has 200,000+ and I dont know the history on the truck. How do I know if I'm getting the power I should be and what should I do to fix the turbo if it is the problem?
at 200000 unless the po replaced the turbo yours is shot. Start looking for a new one before it starts pouring oil into the intake like mine did at 118000. T.E.C. (Turbo Engineering corp) is where I got my turbo, I got mine right away but have heard bad stories. Also just so you know you won't feel any "jolt" of power. A turbo spools up as your RPMs increase so the power gain is gradal. If you don't have any kind of bost pressure gauge there is not a sure fire way to tell if something is wrong other than the oil thing that I know of.

a boost gauge is pretty simple to obtain, it depends what you want you can get a simple one at the parts store for about 25-45 $ or you can get a super trick yo yo holla at ya boy ricer one from somewhere.
new to turbo, I have a naturally aspirated 22r also, this truck just came my way, good price, better body etc. thought some more power and efi would be nice.
id stay away from rebuilding your own turbo your turbo can spool up to 100,000rpm so if you even rub one of those balanced fins the wrong way its just gonna take out your new bearings
to check your turbo while the engine is off check your turbine for shaft play a little bit of play is ok. it should also spin very easily.
check your exhaust if its coated with oil chances are its in need of a rebuild.
Its late now and I will check things on my truck tomorrow, right now I'm just gathering info for tomorrow. I'm not looking for a powerhorse, just a reliable fuel injected rig that I can convert all of my lockers, suspension, gears ect. onto that is a step up from thee 22r in my garage I've been building/wheeling for the last couple years. If my trbo is not up to par, and I'm not worried about minor power loss (my truck travels up the freeway fine) are there any probable risks in running it as is?
I use a specific garret t3 that works awesome with the factory injection system. The plumbing is a little different. You DO get that noticeable push when it kicks in :grinpimp:
Check the vacum line that goes into the turbo. You should be getting boost at 2800 rpm.If your turbo does need to be rebuilt send it to turbo city in anahiem ca.Mine was 300.00 to rebuid it.It sounds like its ok to me Mine turned into a very thick wihite cloud out the tail pipe when it went.
Yeah my Tec kicks a some but the damn auto tranny usually hogs that right up and does not put it to the wheels. As for rebuilding, if stock it can't happen. Toyota views that part as expendable and replaceable. As got the aluminum chips thing, the runout would have to be REALLY bad. My old turbo had so much run out that it was POORing oil into my intake. So much oil that the engine would not start at times, and I didn't have any chips anywhere. So I would not be too worried about that.
Good luck, and yeah get a boost gauge at autozone, napa, or xyz auto parts store.

I just checked the rubber elbow and found...surprise, oil. A buddy of mine has three extra garret turbo units from an old Mustang 4 banger? I think it is the correct one but will probably be asking some questions when I get it as to making sure it is what I'm looking for.
jegs and summit both sell a WIDE variety of boost gauges and they come with everything you need to install. I just ordered one for my supra turbo motor last night. Get the mechanical style not electric, the MAP sensor is what makes the electric ones $200 and the mechanical only ~$60. You tap it inline with a vaccum line from the intake manifold and thats its besides giving the gauge power.
Yep you need a new turbo. As far if those other ones are the "right" ones, there is no right one. The will not just bolt up, you will need to find or make an adaptor for at least the exaust port. I would also suggest you get a new oil in tube and try to find a larger oil out tube to help ease and increase your oil flow.
Just so you know there should be a boost pressure sensor on the passanger side fender well (may not be there since you don't have a gauge on dash, not sure). You might be able to tap into that easily.
