I am shopping for a 4runner, these are my options so far....what would you pick:
1) (fellow POR member's) $2300 obo - 1984 4runner 5spd, 175k miles, average rust, chipping paint job, 4" genuine sus. springs up front with 3" blocks and 2" shackles in the rear. Added SR5 gauges and seats. On 33" BFG muds with 50% left 2) $4001 1984 4runner with new 22r engine (<2000 miles) rebuilt 5 speed tranny, 2" AAL up front and 2" blocks in rear, basic interior with ripped seat, but the SR5 Clinometer. Entire truck has 167,000 miles on it, and NO rust anywhere on the body. Surface rust on frame only. 3) $2700 1985 SR5 4runner, 5 speed, 157,000 miles, only 45k miles on engine. Minor rust under pass window. 4) $4800 1985 4runner, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, very minor rust under cap, 4" suspen, 3" BL, 35" Mud Kings, stock gears, Interior LOADED. THis could be a show truck. 5) $4000 1986 SR5 4runner (IFS), 5speed, 208,000 on original engine. No Rust! Tight transmission, pretty strong engine, Plush interior with all the options available. LOADED. But IFS. Or 6) $5900 1975 FJ40, Hard top, soft top, new extra gas tank, new bra and a 1976 FJ40 as a parts truck. Those are my options so far. I have a spending budget of $5400, and I have a set of 33x12.5 Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips I will put on whatever I get. I must be at least 4" high with whatever truck I buy. It will be a trail rig that will be safe enough to handle highway speed traffic around philly on a daily basis. I want flex. Fire away!!

#1 for the price. Add a chevy spring swap and a rattle can paint job and spend the rest on a crawler.

#3 is the best choice. The Land Cruiser is nice, but I don't think you would be happy having that as your daily driver.

To All:
What kinda sucks, is my wife is liking the 86 IFS truck (#5). I drove #2 and #5. #2 had a lot of power for the little 22r. Sure sign of a new engine. And #5 was very very nice. But IFS and 208k on the truck. I can't wait to actually drive the #1 truck and find out more info on #3. #3 just popped up on the radar screen today. #4 just looks perfect, if it had 4.88 or better gears and had a 5spd, not the auto. Remember, the auto can't have a crawler nearly as easily as a 5speed. My choice would be #3, for the EFI. An SAS on the IFS one wouldn't be too bad, but would cost money that you wouldn't need to spend on an '85.

For a Daily Driver / Wheeler: #3... Price, 5-speed, etc. That snowplow attachment on # 2 would scare me.
Not a Daily Driver? Go for the Land Cruiser, no question.

You guys are not jumping at #2 with the new engine and transmission. It comes with a warrentee. Is it because of the price? (oh and that one needs a paint job. Only a glossy primer right now)

Still say #3 is the best buy. Hell, if you don't buy it, I'm sure that there are at least 5-6 others on POR that would jump at it... now... if only I had money.. |

I'm with most others here, the EFI makes for a much better engine. You just can't compare a carb to it. Plus you start out 16hp and 30 - 40 lb/ft of torque ahead. The lift and tahres are easy to ad... EFI is not.

You forgot about #7, the 85 EFI 5spd 4runner( non sr5),all stock with 88k miles and very little rust around the rear fenders for $2000.I would choose # 1 or #7 Frame Bender #1 should look familiar. You got some pics of it wheelin in MD.
