rookie question

Just bought my first 4X4, an 85 Toyota with 4 inch lift, 36"X 12.50 TSL's and I took it out today for the first time. My question is: Is it normal for a oil light to come on going up steep hills? The level is full, but everytime I went up or down a STEEP hill, the light came on. Any help would be great!

Could do that because oil press is droping because of oil not going in the pick up. Just don't sit that way for long. I don't have a light so i don't know if mine is the same. Good luck

The "Idiot Light" on lots of rigs comes on around 3-5 psi. Add a guage when you can. An acumulator helps in some situations, but only last's about 30 seconds.

It might be worth dropping the oil pan and looking at the pickup. If you don't know the maintenance history of the truck, you want to make sure the pickup isn't partially clogged. As I learned from expensive experience, this can be a bad thing. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

Just a thought: You may have had a 'dipstick' for a previous owner. You may have the wrong dipstick (too long). Your dipstick may say full, but it really isn't.

mine always does that too, its never had any problems, but then again im not the one to ask because i really dont care about my motor as its about to die anyway, i typically dont notice low oil until its below two quarts

i drive mine down steep hills and i have never had the light come on going up or down. check your oil pick up and the dip stick. unless you'd like a new engine don't worry. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0">

for $10 you can buy a gasket and drop the pan and look, mine used to do this pretty often, the pickup screen was loaded with RTV and chunks of timing chain guide. Dunno if cleaning this off helped or if it's just that without all the leaks my motor usually has more oil in in but I hardly ever see the pressure drop when wheeling since I fixed this.
