22R, Idle problems

I've been having problems with my 82 Toyota PU for MONTHS. Basically it'll idle fine for up to 2 days sometimes if i let it set, but once i start driving it around (a few days) it begins not wanting to idle at all. I drop my foot off the gas and it dies.

Things that may help, its not a stock Toyota carb its a POS rebuild from some shitty ass company. I've replaced the Fuel Cut Solenoid because the old one was really fucked up, i've changed the fuel filter and fuel pump. Checked all the fuel lines.. everythings fine.

My next move was going to be, drilling the holes open at all times on the Fuel Cut Solenoid (yea i know it'll prefire and not want to shut off) but if this solves my problem i know what it is and i can just go buy another one.

If someone can help me out with some productive info it would be appriciated.

Tia.

unplug the harness to the carb, find the wires that run to the carb or specifically to the fuel cut solenoid and just use some test leads or aligator clips, 12v of the bat, and then ground to some thing (bat) see if it runs ok, this is how i diagnosed mine, Mine might also be a diode that i need to replace in that box, but for now i just scabbed in 12v from the windshield wiper motor (hot when the ignition is on)

Mine was intermitant just like yours would run fine some days and run shitty others, it was the bain of my existance...

I chased my tail on this for 3 weeks

yea i've tried that. i just ran strait wires from the fuel cut solenoid to the battery so that it was in the "open" position at all times. And it ran fine for about a week. I took it up on a snow run and while i was up there it started back to not idleing. I adjusted the idle up to about 1500 and it started running fine again. It has been sitting for probably a month, i was gonna take it up this past weekend and drove it around for 2 days problem free. Right when i was leaving town it died on me at a stop light.

i have yet to get a chance to check that diode because its at a friends house, but im going over there tomorrow right after work. I'll take a look then, is there any way for me to test that diode? or how can i tell that its bad?

thanks for the replys its appriciated, one of the trickest prob's i've ever ran across to catch... never had anything thats' ever given me this much of a headache.. lol

I have sort of a similar problem on mine. I grabbed a low mileage 70,000 mile carb off a 85 truck I installed it hooked up all the vaccum lines with a chart for a 82 canadian truck with no emissions. Everything is hooked up correctly now.
It is awsome when you are moving plenty of power. However it idles rough and when you put your foot on the brake it dies. Very anoying at stops lights and stuff. I am going to get some carb cleaner and check the vaccum lines and base plate and stuff for now.
The other thing I am going to check is the timing I believe I maybe having too much preignition as well.

I found my problem. I did some electrical tests it turns out I had no power to anything on the harness to the carb so no power to the choke. So I checked the fuses and I had a blown 15 amp engine fuse replaced it and the truck runs fine now.

I will check that.

I believe I found the diode he was talking about. I opened it up and theres 3 wires going into it.. a Green,White and Black I believe. Everything checked out fine for me!

I had the same problem on my 86. I just turned up the idle screw on the carb and used carb cleaner and it went away. My idle is now at about 900RPM.
Oh yeah, maybe a bad vaccum advance?
