Post What's the best shackle length?

I know that the shorter the shackle, the rougher the ride.

And I know that the length affects the lift, yada, yada, yada. And pinion angle, and caster, yada, yada, yada.

What I want to know is what shackle length do you consider to be the OPTIMUM length for a smooth ride?

Phil

So what does that equate to in overall length? About 5-1/2" or 6"?

Stock are 3.5" long, I like 5" long shackles. Measured center of eye to center of eye.

It's more complicated and also depends on spring length, arch, and shackle angle.

I dunno a real answer to your question though.

Here are the longest shackles I have ever seen. This guy pulled up to the shop one day.

Thanks guys. That's kind of a scary shackle in that pic.

I know there are a lot of factors involved, but most of the trucks I've seen where the driver describes the ride as smooth or soft or something similar have had 6" to 8" inch shackles (mostly ~8"). So I was looking for some confirmation.

All of this is research for my suspension designs for my 84 Pickup as well as 95 4Runner.

Maybe I should rephrase the question.

You really have to figure out what is best for you and your spring configuration. Like Jay said there is a lot involved. Too long and the truck may be less stable, too short and it will limit spring travel and suspension flex. There is a balance between the extremes, truck weight, shackle angle, spring type all play a factor in choosing shackle length. I would suggest getting some flat bar steel and some bolts and make yourself a set and see how you like them, then test them. Adjust as needed.

That is downright scary!!!

When I did my swap Jon told me to go 1 1/2" over stock. When combined with the AP front hanger this puts the axle just about stock location as far as the caster and pinion angle. My truck rides pretty smooth and it wheels great for Mrs. OOP'S
