How much advance can a 22re take?

My engine was rebuilt by the PO, and it seems strong as hell, with good compression across the cylinders. It's got a Thorley header, a good 2.25" exhaust, an undertimined cam (I think it's a mild 252 type cam), and K&N in the stock air box, and "some head work". The thing is it runs best with 17 or 18 degrees of ignition advance, (unshorted), I mean it runs great! Good throttle response, no flat spots, and it pulls hard on up to about 5k before it runs out of breath.

Question is, can I run it with those two extra degrees of iginition advance? I don't hear any pinging, and it seems to run fine even on regular gas. Do you think the cam is allowing this?

Blue Coyote was saying their race truck responds well to advance, but I don't know what they've done to it internally.

I have been running mine there for about 20,000 miles, no problems yet. I also run a hotter plug, and I richened the mixture two clicks via the cogged wheel under the black cover of the maf. Mine is bored, and also has a header and it runs pretty well for a deuce deuce.

I know for each degree of advance we get here, you Canucks can only get about .7 degree's.

Better never hear detonation on a RE. The knock sensor will hear it before you do and back off the timing.
Putting to much advance you may think your fine but actually dumping more advance then you are gaining because of the knock sensor. Not sure how you could check it under load to see how much advance you have and how much is backing off. On a GM you can run WINASDL on a lap top but never seen anything similar for a Toy.

How much total advance are you running? That's the number I'd be more concerned with. Use a nice light that you can adjust and rev it up.
Mine runs 38 degrees total, and I think that it's around 13 or so initial. I wouldn't go over 40 degrees total.

I've got a good advance light, so I'll try that tonight, but I'm thinking that with the altitude that I do most of my wheeling at, I should be able to get away with a little extra.
