check your intake hose for cracks. check all grounds(usually white/black stripe) make sure the afm flapper isn't stuck open. pull the plugs and see what they look like. or you could search. click on search and put in 22re and get ready to read your eyes out.

check your fuel pressure also. tell me you didn't run fuel injector cleaner through it. if so try some marvel mistery oil, about a 1/3 of quart to half a tank or so. if it is the fuel pump that may save it.
also compression check, timing check. look in the distributer and see if there is any water, or little pencil line looking things.

pull fan belt, start it, take a hand held propane torch. (not lit )
blow it up under where you think the leak is, increase in rpm = leak
intake manifold gasket may have taken a dump.

What he said. Carb cleaner works great too. Check your intake tube and throttle body gasket, all vacuum hoses and replace any that are questionable. I did everything I could think of until my buddy told me to check the intake tube and sure enough there was a hole in the bottom from the PS pump pulley. In the year that I've had my 85 4R, 99% of all my issues have been from a vacuum leak.

If you hear a hissing sound under the intake num 4 you should look at it. Not normal, and holes are bad. Holes in the header will cause wierd things and the junk smells of gasoline. So on the intake side Id say same thing.

Post some pics of the hole!

The TPS won't cause the engine to run rough or not at all. The TPS sensor has a default fail mode. When I took my 85 4R in to have it smogged they had to check the timing by grounding the test connector. The computer would not relinquish control due to, later determined, a bad TPS. It still ran like a champ tho and I didn't have any trouble codes either.
