Oooooooooops! (turbo)
well with all teh turbo stuff i've been reading this week i found several great articles on shimming hte waste gate actuator to gain boost, well i've also read how the CT20 is a lame turbo and not really capable of makign real boost... so why not remove teh actuator hose all together and plug it
![]() i gotta say it sure sounded cool and accelerated faster than anything i've driven in a long time... but ummm, ya... BOOM motor stalls and check eng light comes on! took my foot off the gas and she's back to life... dunno what it was but it scared the hell outta me! 5 8mm washer's is a gain over stock, but definatly not near as much ass as the removed actuator ![]() according to the articles i'm pushing 10-11psi now ![]() and i can bark 38's @ 8psi with a spool into second now

try that on a diesel engine and end up like me, a 4 month top to bottom rebuild. NICK

To avoid a lean condition when the boost starts getting way up there you could install a pressure switch on your intake manifold set at around 10 psi that automatically switches on the cold start injector (basically bypassing the thermal switch in the front of the intake manifold) to add more fuel to keep it closer to stoich.

You should think about a new garett t3/t4 hybrid turbo. they go for about $450 at www.turbochargers.com new! also go for larger injectors.
The toyota CT20 is not a bad turbo, it just isn't great. they are prone to cracking in the exhaust housing and have limited flow when the engine is at high RPMs 5000+ but at mid rpm they will boost like crazy you could probably get 20+ psi. if you want to add more power, think about adding an air to air intercooler. you could find one at a junkyard... with the intercooler your boost will be lower at the manifold but you will gain power because the air is more dense. By far the most simple way to get more fuel to the engine is to install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and crank up the fuel pressure... this will force more fuel through the injectors and help compensate for the extra boost pressure. Careful with that engine... your stock pistons wont like extra boost, hot timing, and lean conditions... they will melt!!! |
