I am going to be putting a 22re from a 87 pick-up into my girlfirends 80 pick-up i have the complete 87 truck and i was wondering if any of you have done this swap and would let me know what kind of troubles i am going to run into
I did it, 22re from an 89 4Runner into an 80 pickup. Not much trouble getting the motor in. I used the 20r radiator which was ever so slightly different. It's a little tighter than it was in the 2nd gen engine bay making the alternator slightly annoying. Motor mounts tranny mounts etc. bolt in no mod's. Wiring kind of sucks. Get an FSM for the EFI truck and one for the carb truck, it will help you a lot when it comes to making splices etc. If I was going to do it again I would order a conversion harness from Offroad Solutions because I hate wiring and it was a little more than a simple task. Took me a lot of thinking and time to get it done.
i looked at that kit on off road solutions but is the ecu any different then the stock and is the engine harness any different then stock cause i have all that and if they are the same all i need is the body(dash main) harness right? and will that just be plug and play or cut and splice cause i suck and hate wiring
LOL, a little tip for ya, make sure your motor mounts on the motor are correct for your year (of the frame). They are *Ever* so slightly different on the newer motors, and it'll piss you off for 30 minutes trying to make them line up (it can be done, but its a royal PITA)
Ok well Im going to tell you that if you are going to wire it, and you think wiring sucks, then it's gonna suck. Offroad Solutions makes, yes as close to as possible plug and play, but! Im not sure if it's the same now, I did this a while ago, but I dont believe they had harnesses in stock for the "later" style connectors. I think the connectors changed ever so slightly in 89 on the EFI's. But anyway, I told you what you need, two wiring diagrams, a donor vehicle/harness and components, a lot of time, some beer and a vast vocabulary in cuss words. There is a lot of good info in the faq here, in fact I kicked myself in the face chuck norris style when I realized I was a member here and hadn't found what I was looking for. Toyota made a few (haha) different ecu's over the years but I think the real difference came into the connectors at the sensors, but I dont know shit.
:flipoff2:
You can ask for a little more info all day but nothing will get done until you start digging into that harness and looking at schematics.
PS My budbuilt tcase crossmember with some ford u-bolts helped me eliminate a bit of thinking, therefore cell loss.
