Well, last weekend i broke a pinion in my front axle(thread here) Today i finally got arround to tearing it down to repair, but have run into an issue. When the pinion broke, the head of the pinion lodged itself sideways against the ring gear and the housing, jamming it up solid. The problem is, i cant rotate the birfs to orient them properly to remove them.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to get the axleshafts and birfs out of the front axle? Im about to the point where im ready to cut the third member into pieces to dislodge the broken pinion, i just really dont want to have to go that route.
put it in 4x4 and try to rotate things a little to dislodge them. cut the knuckle off like you do to rotate them. there was an episode on extreme 4x4 how to do it. Then weld it back on.
You're right, it should, but it doesnt. Everything is jambed up so hard that both tires were locked, i even tried putting the tires back on, locking the hubs and tried backing up and driving forward hoping to either dislodge it or strip the ring gear. Neither happened, it just dragged the tires. As soon as it stops raining ill take the torch to the third and break the fawker out of there.
And crash, while a 60 is in my future and i am on the hunt for one, i would like to finish out this wheeling season on the toy axles. Yeah, this is a PITA to fix, but my rig should be back on 4 tires either today or tommarow, ready to keep wheeling. Ill put 1-tons under it when i step up to 42's and can no longer keep the toy stuff in one piece. A little breakage like this every couple years i can handle no problem.
I had the same thing happen to me last season in my 86... we ended up taking a torch to the third and cutting the hells outta it to be able to spin the axles so i could get them out of the housing... best of luck to you... btw drain the gear oil before you start cutting...
Cut the third member in half and got it all appart. Found some more carnage as well, turns out i broke a few teeth off the ring gear as well as snapping the pinion.:shaking:
I wonder if you could have pointed the pinion tword the ground(axle have to be out) and then try to rotate the axle shafts and hope that little piece of pinion dropped back into place, instead of it jamming against the ring gear.
You did a good job cutting that up.
I hope I never have that problem.
What is the cause of that, backlash loose,HP,Lead foot?
Front end was ~2-3' in the air with the truck in 2nd gear, single low on the rev limiter. I had to get the front end to clear two massive holes, and a mound of hardpacked dirt between the holes that hits your axle tube solid. I almost made it. When the front end landed, both tires had traction, and this was the end result.
