The part was originally designed based off the Remco driveline discos used by people who flat tow their RWD vehicles behind their RV's. Just keep it greased.
When used for RV towing the Remco units have a single keyway that only allows the drive shaft to connect in one position. This keeps the u-joints in proper phase. Units used for off road have this keyway removed to allow the driveshaft to connect at many different positions. Depending on how your drive shaft is configured you could run in to problems if you connect the drive shaft and then run the truck at high speed with the drive shaft u-joints out of phase to each other. If you are towing with it, make sure you disconnect the shaft before towing.
Yep you guys are right, the U joints would still be in phased correctly. When I spoke with the Remco years ago, then told me that they believed it was important to only have the drive shaft connect to the output shaft one way. They were concerned about vibrations at high speed.
Brian Ellinger (Diamond and Front Range) also sells them that configured to fit his crossmember and stock.
They work amazing if you hook up a simple air ram to shift it.
As far as high speeds. The only time I'm at speed is back from Wrecking Ball/Outer Limits/Hwy 20. No problems for 2 years except when I didn't run a limit strap and leveraged the rear shaft so hard it did the bearings. But that's on me, not a fault of the part.
i sold mine. once it unloaded on an obstacle, and it unloaded every time on me from that moment on. Trail tough warrantied the parts, but it still didn't work right. and it SUCKED at high speeds. i have a d300 behind my reduction case now and i will never go back.
What does 'sucks' at high speeds mean? Seriously, I don't know. I would like to be more educated on what you're seeing. I've never had a problem with it popping at or jamming, but I've also always had it on the ram setup.
Good point, i should have been more specific. it was extremely noisy at higher speeds, and i had that handle slice my elbow on numerous occasions when it disengaged. even with the HD detent springs, the handle would 1/2 disengage at higher speeds or under load. i ended up using a bungee to hold it it, but that never stopped the chattering. i spent most of my time in FWD to avoid having to deal with that thing. I spoke to the vendor that sold it to me, and he told me that once they disengage they will continue to do so at more frequent intervals. i don't want to disappoint those who have had good experiences with this product, but i would not run this thing again even if it were free. i love my 300.
I ran mine for about a year then sold it. No problems strength wise, I broke several outputs and it didnt seem to phase it. If your rear driveline is not well balanced, it will disengage itself, and mine disengaged from time time to time for seemingly no reason. I put some stronger detent ball springs in it and it seemed to help it stay engaged better. The pneumatic cylinder works well since it keeps it engaged and disengaged when you want it and you can just use a simple pneumatic switch. Search for "pneumatic cylinder" rather than "air ram", should find a ton in the $20 dollar range. All in all the front digs were fun but the quirks associated with it were not worth the trouble.
We use one in the stock mod Toyota. Had to have it replaced once due to bending. Then the new one came in and didn't fit. They took care of it though and it works fine now. Make sure to grease the little pads on the collar. We ruined the first ones when they got dry. It takes a little getting used to shifting at the right time so it doesn't bind up. No other problems really so far.
the nut that holds everything on is really long, and there's not way to secure it other than loctite - I'd like to see and improvement there.
since the nut is so long at Highway speeds your driveshaft try's to "bend" the nut, this causes mine to "touch" the collar to the other side teeth and make an awful clicking sound when not under power at higher speeds
I ran one on my buggy with 40 to 44" tires. I broke an output shaft and a drive line and the disco still worked great. The only thing I didn't like was the noise at high speeds but it wasn't coverd and was right behind the seats
i have one and run it fine with 42in tires. never had it at high speeds. im now looking at using an electric actuator to control it???? we will see any info is appreciated
With just doing the air ram on mine this winter. It engages smooth as pie at anytime.
Mine is a little finicky getting it to pop out though. I pop the clutch once or twice and it will go. I need to throw some more grease on it since I messed with it. Still getting used to it.
With an auto it will be hit or miss. I could get it to shift with out the clutch before when I had a lever. You really got to slam it out though. Going back in I dont think would still be a problem. As long as you are shifting at that right time it will go.
Sometimes you may have to hit neutral to disengage. Only problem then is if you need to rock the truck a bit to get it to line up, you can't on flat ground like we can with a clutch.
Thanks. I think im going to order one up for the buggy and give it a try
