I blew up my 22r and was just wondering what year celica motors would be good to swap in. I heard they were higher compression and had a little more power. If anybody has done this I would appreciate a little enlightenment on the subject. Currently I found a 82 celica motor would this be a good swap?
You must have found one of the elusive high output 22R series. I've been looking for one for years. If you run into a 4-valve/cylinder deal, send it my way.
For celica questions: www.celica-gts.com before the old grumpy fawlkers kill you on this board.
There is no difference in performance between truck and celica 22r.
they have the same engine in the same years as trucks, if you get one get the 85 it should have the newer style head and pistons, and the fuel injection on the early ones is very simple, and not as good as the late model truck stuff
the 84 truck fuel injector is a werid unit, but the celica goes back to late 83 with the same units as the 85+ trucks. you can tell by the three plug computer.
Pre 1988.5 4runner / trucks have 3 plugs.
I think the early 22R celicas had a 2 plug EFI system.
A photo of one is below.
