Is it possable to up the pressure of a 3.4 power steering pump for use with a hydro assist? im getting ready to put my 1.5in ram on and i want to make sure i dont get the slow steering blues. I know with the 22r pump you can drill out the orface and bump the pressure. I dont want to be killing the pump all the time so let me know about reliability as well. Thanks ttl.
Unplug the wiring on the pump or a start. Other than that, I would guess it'll run 1.5 fine. We ran a 2" and had slow steering below ~1200 rpm. Swapped in a P pump, and had good steering at idle. All day crawling.
High speed turns, back and forth, 1000 rpm+ was much better.
Does the 3.4 pump have a restrictor like the 22r pump? should i drill it? Im planning on running the stock resivore (part of the pump) a stock 22r resivore on the low pressure side and am going to try to run the low pressure side through my radiators auto trans cooler. If I can get the air out i should have enough fluid.
Anyone think this set up will work or am i planning all wrong. This is my first hydro assist set up i have done so its a learning experience. Let me know
I ran a stock 3.4 pump with a 1.5" ram with little success. With the restrictor stock the steering was to slow for a daily driver on the street. I drilled out the restrictor and the pump would cavitate and wear out the backplate on the pump resulting in no assist. They are made out of aluminum. Got another pump and tried a different sized hole in the restrictor with the same result, another pump with a different sized hole and the same result, a burned up pump. The pumps were all fine until I did high rpm driving then the pump would cavitate (wine) then it was all over. This was with a big external cooler and larger reservoir running redline synthetic p.s. fluid. Before the pump would stop working the assist was better than my psc pump. This is my experience with the 3.4 pump, maybe someone else has had good luck.
